Application Process

Application Information

The Trident/MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program serves as a national leader in Family Medicine and provides well-trained physicians to needed communities. The program cultivates an educational environment based on best practices that fosters both professional and personal development in a community-oriented framework.

Application Process

We use the ERAS System to receive applications. For your application to be complete it must contain the following:

  • Dean's Letter
  • Transcript
  • 3 Letters of recommendation

The Resident Selection Committee screens the completed applications and invites applicants for an interview. Prompt invitations to interview will be offered.

Current Students or Graduates of US Medical Schools

Current students or graduates of AACOM or LCME-accredited medical schools will be offered interviews under the following circumstances:

  • Completion of medical school in 4 years*
  • No failed attempts on any portion of USMLE examinations*
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Current student or within 2 years of graduation from medical school

*Current students or graduates of AACOM or LCME-accredited medical schools who have taken longer than 4 years to complete medical school or have any failed attempts on any portion of USMLE examinations will be considered on an individual basis. We will be unable to offer interviews to those with 2 or more failures on any portion of the USMLE examinations.

Individual consideration will be given to all students performing clinical rotations with a current member of our residency program or department.

Current Students or Graduates of Non-US Medical Schools

Current students of a non-LCME accredited school will be offered interviews under the following circumstances:

  • ECFMG Eligible
  • No failed attempts on any portion of USMLE examinations and a minimum USMLE score of 196
  • A favorable recommendation from a faculty, resident, or residency alumnus of the Department of Family Medicine at MUSC (this recommendation must be made based upon personal experience with the candidate in a clinical setting)

Individual consideration will be given to those applicants with a favorable recommendation from a clinical faculty member at the Medical University of South Carolina.

At this time, our program is unable to sponsor visas.

Interview & Selection Process

Interviews will be scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from mid-October through January. The interviews will be as close to the applicants preferred dates as possible. Interviews are scheduled with faculty members and residents, and lunch with residents will be arranged. The applicant will also have the opportunity to tour the Trident Family Medicine as well as the Trident Medical Center.

Our interviewing process is designed to make the selection process a fair and enriching experience. Interviewers are provided the information stated in the application and impressions are recorded by each interviewer. In February, these reports and the required information are studied carefully by the Resident Selection Committee and used to rank applicants for the National Resident Matching Program.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) developed ERAS®-the Electronic Residency Application Service, to transmit residency applications, letters of recommendation, Dean's Letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and medical schools to residency program directors using the Internet.
