Diversity Presentation

Psych Grand Rounds Diversity & Inclusion Presentation

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences hosts bimonthly Grand Rounds that span the academic year. On April 9  we hosted Tiffany Harrop, PhD and Amanda Hecker, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellows in the Community and Public Safety Division, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. The presentation covered a range of issues related to forensic treatment and assessment of individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. The presentation began with relevant background on racial and cultural disparities within the legal system and the importance of culturally-competent interview, assessment, and documentation techniques, followed by a discussion of cultural differences in psychiatric diagnoses and racial based traumatic stress. The presentation also focused on a review of cultural disparities and considerations in various forensic evaluations and treatment settings.
