Message From the Chair

The Department of Radiology and Radiological Science is an academic department within the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is South Carolina’s only comprehensive academic health science center and is committed to preserve and optimize human life in South Carolina and beyond. The Department of Radiology has a long tradition of excellence in both clinical and educational activities. We are guided by the mission of MUSC to change what's possible in health care through excellence in education, research and service.

The department has one of the most advanced diagnostic imaging facilities in the country ranging from conventional radiography to dual source multi-detector CT (including photon counting CT), twin beam PET/CT, 1.5 and 3 Tesla large bore MRI’s and digital 2D and 3D mammography. We offer a wide array of advanced image-guided procedures for the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of a range of diseases including occlusion of aortic aneurysms, uterine artery embolization and tumor ablation therapies.

Our main hospital departments care for adults with a focus on trauma, urology, neurosciences, and orthopedics.The Ashley River Tower (ART) is a state-of-the-art building with 190 beds, operating rooms, cardiovascular center and interventional radiology. This center provides specialized inpatient care for gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and oncology services. The MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women's Pavilion is one of the most patient and family centered and technologically advanced hospitals for children and their families in the nation. It offers inpatient pediatric specialty services, including pediatric radiology, labor and delivery care as well as an advanced maternal fetal medicine center.

In addition to our downtown medical campus locations, MUSC Health currently has five strategically located outreach sites offering imaging services. East Cooper, Chuck Dawley Medical Park, West Ashley Medical Pavilion, Primary Care – North Charleston, R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion, and Nexton Medical Park. Additional MUSC Health facilities include Medical Centers in Chester, Florence, Lancaster and Marion, SC. 

Our nationally recognized team consists of 45 radiologists who are subspecialty trained experts in all fields of radiology and six advanced practice practitioners. The department is organized by organ systems permitting our radiologists to serve as important members of subspecialty care teams. Through participation in the interdisciplinary clinical conferences, our staff facilitates the appropriate utilization of imaging studies and interventional procedures.

We offer several instructor level fellowship positions including musculoskeletal, breast imaging, body imaging and cardiothoracic. We also offer a total of two Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved fellowships in nuclear medicine, and diagnostic neuroradiology. MUSC radiology has a long tradition and strong commitment to radiology education and offers 13 highly desirable radiology residency positions yearly in diagnostic radiology (11) and IR/DR Integrated (2).

The department has a strong commitment to clinical and translational research. Our research faculty includes physician and PhD scientists. Our research programs are robust including cardiac and vascular imaging, vascular interventional radiology, lung cancer evaluation and neurosciences. We are committed to the continued development and expansion of radiological science research to surpass the boundaries of current health care.

Our longstanding tradition of excellence extends into the clinical setting. We excel in many areas of patient care with nationally and internationally recognized programs in vascular-interventional radiology and cardiopulmonary imaging. Our top priorities include improving patient care and access to our imaging department whilst providing high quality services to our referring physicians. We strive to develop new knowledge through technology application and innovative approaches to patient care
