Mission, Plan of Action, & Meet the Team

Our mission is to create a culture dedicated to shaping the field of surgery to be more representative of our patient population. Our goal is to continue to expand our cultural understanding within our talented team, which leads to improved patient-centered care.

What are we doing?

  • Dedicated Grand Rounds Speakers with focus on health care disparities and cultural competency in professionalism and patient care

Our Goals

  • Celebrate and highlight the rich culture within our department
  • Provide educational support and resources to understand and address disparities within our patient population with an aim to improve patient outcomes
  • Create an environment that excels in cultural dexterity to allow all members to develop and grow professionally
  • Align the Department of Surgery's efforts with that of the MUSC enterprise

Meet Our Disparities Education & Cultural Dexterity Committee

The committee is a combination of faculty, staff, and residents who unite to provide various voices and unique perspectives. Our vision is to utilize an interdepartmental multidisciplinary approach to face challenges and create lasting solutions.

Sharee Wright, M.D. is  a vascular surgeon who practices all aspects of vascular and endovascular surgery. She specialized in diabetic limb salvage, aortoiliac disease, aortic aneurysms, and carotid disease. Her leadership roles include serving the department as Vice Chair of Healthcare Disparities Education and Cultural Dexterity and the College of Medicine as the Senior Associate Dean, Pathways.

Adria Johnson, M.D.

Adria Johnson, M.D. is a fellowship-trained surgeon at the South Carolina Burn Center and is double board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. She treats both pediatric and adult burn patients between the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital and MUSC University Hospital.

Dr. Johnson grew up in Fargo, North Dakota and obtained her undergraduate degrees and medical degree at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. She completed general surgery residency in Portland, Maine at Maine Medical Center where she was inspired to further subspecialize in burn surgery and surgical critical care. She then completed a burn/critical care fellowship in Galveston, Texas at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Children's Texas.
