Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be better able to:

  • Review the immunopathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Discuss the immunologically targeted treatment of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Review the innate immune system
  • Discuss acute gout as an example of a disease driven by aberrant innate immune function
  • Review the adaptive immune system
  • Discuss the details of T-cell function
  • Explain reasons for hyperCKemia that are not specifically related to myositis
  • Identify how to overcome potential treatment challenges in the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies
  • Develop a plan for diagnostic work up of myositis and its mimics
  • Describe the most salient clinical features of anti-HMGCR myopathy
  • Recognize the important differences between the sub-populations of statin-exposed and statin-naïve anti HMGCR myopathy.
  • Strategize to find the best potential treatment regimens including treatment of resistant anti-HMGCR myopathy
  • Discuss the current status of osteoporosis management in the United States

  • Review updated clinical guidance for risk assessment and osteoporosis treatment

  • Explain the justification of the concept of “goal-directed therapy”

  • Review the need for life-long management of osteoporosis

  • Describe the effects of transitioning from one osteoporosis drug to another

  • Discuss the role of bone building agents in a treatment sequence

Credit Designation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Medical University of South Carolina, and the South Carolina Rheumatism Society. The Medical University of South Carolina is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Annual Meeting Registration fee of $200 includes continental breakfasts, breaks, course syllabus and credit processing.

Registration for the conference is now closed. 


A refund for conference registration will be made upon written request prior to March 24, 2020; however, $50 will be retained for administrative costs. No refunds will be made after April 24, 2020. We reserve the right to cancel the program if necessary. Full registration fees will be refunded for canceled programs. The Medical University cannot be responsible for reimbursement of airline or other transportation fees, hotel or rental car charges, including penalties. By registering for this conference, you acknowledge and agree to this cancellation policy.

The conference rate is $255.00 and the room block for Society registrants will be held until Tuesday, March 29, 2022. The room block may fill prior to March 29, 2022 and availability cannot be guaranteed. We suggest you make your reservation as soon as possible. Parking: Current Parking fees per day are as follows: Valet Parking rate is currently $36.00 per day & will be charged to individual guest rooms on a nightly basis. Self-parking is located in the Charleston County Municipal Parking Garage located behind the Hotel. Self-parking is a separate charge paid directly to the garage upon exiting. Current fee is $20.00 per day, and subject to change.
