I have always loved and cared about people, but it wasn't until I participated in lung cancer research here at MUSC during high school that I knew I wanted to be a physician.  Six years and a microbiology degree later, I'm finally here studying medicine at the same place where this journey started.  Since being here, I've gotten to use my Spanish while volunteering at the student-run CARES clinic to provide healthcare for under insured patients, and I am the secretary for the Cardiology Student Interest Group (CSIG).  Currently, I am interested in surgery, Med-Peds (a combination internal medicine and pediatrics residency), and psychiatry, but I have no clue where I am going to end up. On the bright side, being right next to the hospital allows for endless shadowing and research opportunities as well as a constant reminder of what we are working towards as medical students, and I couldn't be happier to be here and be a part of this program.

Hi guys! I serve as one of the Wellness Leaders as well as a Medical School Ambassador for the college. I am super interested in pediatrics, which manifests in my volunteering with Heart Health, a wellness/fitness program for low income kids, and my new involvement with research in the pediatric intensive care unit. I am passionate about all things fitness and wellness, so if you need to know about the food, workout scene, sunset spots, and anything in between in Charleston, and how to keep up with caring for yourself in medical school, please come to me!

I’ve always wanted to be a doctor and MUSC was always my dream school since I grew up here in Charleston. At Clemson, I was a psychology major with a biology minor, so I was really excited to come to med school and learn about the human body in ways I hadn’t before! At MUSC, I'm a member of the Medical Student Alumni Association as well as a few specialty interest groups on campus. For fun, I love to listen to broadway musicals and spend as much time as possible on the water!

Marlaina is a second year medical student originally from Atlanta, GA. Her family relocated to Inman, SC while she was in college at the University of Kentucky. Marlaina majored in Psychology and minored in Biology at UK before choosing to attend MUSC for medical school. She chose MUSC because of the friendly, collaborative atmosphere among the students and faculty and the unique opportunities offered by the AnMed program which she will be participating in as a clinical student. Being so close to the beach definitely helped sell her on MUSC, too! Feel free to reach out to Marlaina if you have any questions about being a medical student!

Welcome to MUSC! I am from Aiken, SC and attended Clemson University. I majored in Health Science while double minoring in life sciences and psychology. Besides being on the orientation team, I enjoy being a student ambassador tour guide at MUSC, participating in the independent student analysis committee for reaccreditation of MUSC, and serving as the Director of Operations at the 529 Meeting Street Telehealth Clinic. I have loved my experience at MUSC thus far, especially with the wonderful faculty and staff who are willing to help you at every turn. This truly is an amazing place to learn the science, art, and skills of medicine, and I sincerely hope that you enjoy it, too! Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions that you may have!

Along with being one of your Social Co-Chairs and COM Team leaders, I'm also an outreach coordinator for the MUSC chapter of Physicians for Human Rights. I'm a trained sexual assault victim advocate and am passionate about medical outreach, so please reach out if you are too! Right now, I'm interested in surgery, infectious disease, and critical care. On my downtime, I love doing yoga, cooking, whatever self care I can fit into my schedule. I love being a mentor and love being at MUSC, so I can't wait to meet all of you and help you feel at home!

My name is Xzavier Killings and I am a second year medical student from Roebuck, SC. I graduated from Davidson College, where I studied Biology and German Studies while competing in Division I athletics on the Track and Field team. While at Davidson, I broke the Indoor Long Jump School Record and also volunteered at a local preschool. After college, I received the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to travel the world studying healthcare and healing! My travels brought me to Zambia, Jamaica, India and Belize where I observed various healthcare issues ranging from HIV/AIDS, Childhood and Newborn Mortality, Diabetes and Nutrition to Sickle Cell Anemia. I found an appreciation for global health and learned so many insightful and inspiring lessons on my journey. One takeaway that I cherish, is the strength that can be found within vulnerability. As a future healthcare provider, I hope to help empower patients to turn vulnerability and insecurity into opportunities of growth, encouragement and strength! When I started medical school, I knew I wanted to be involved in organizations and initiatives that shared the vision to support and inspire underrepresented and underserved communities. I am a member of the Admissions Committee, COM Team Leader Training, Student National Medical Association (SNMA), COM Diversity Ambassadors, Presidential Scholars Program and I am the 2nd year President of the Pediatric Interest Group. My research interests include healthcare disparities and how racism impacts pediatric patients health and well-being. One quote I would like to share as you embark on this new chapter of your medical career is by Confucius, it reads "The man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can't are both correct."
