Vascular Surgeon Gabor Winkler MD Joins the Department; Serves Patients at MUSC Health – Columbia

Dr Winkler joins MUSC

Vascular surgeon Gabor Winkler, M.D. is a double-board certified, fellowship-trained vascular surgeon who will provide comprehensive vascular services to patients at MUSC Health – Columbia. Dr. Winkler treats patients with a wide range of vascular disease including aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease using advanced minimally invasive techniques, carotid disease, dialysis access care and vein care. His patient care philosophy is to build a strong, trusting relationship and develop a plan of care specific to each patient through shared-decision making.

Before joining MUSC, Dr. Winkler was the Medical Director of the McLeod Vein Center and an attending surgeon at the McLeod Regional Medical Center, where he also was a member of the Medical Executive Committee (MEC). He has served as both the Board of the Holy Redeemer Ambulatory Surgery Center and the MEC at Holy Redeemer Health System in Meadowbrook, PA, where he was Vice President of Surgical Services and Chair of the Department of Surgery.  Dr. Winkler also served on the MEC of Deborah Heart and Lung Center, while he was the Director of the Division of Vascular and General Surgery and Program Director of the General Vascular Surgery Residency Program.  He brings these leadership skills to MUSC Health – Columbia, where he will develop and lead the vascular surgery program in the midlands.

Born in Hungary and educated in Austria, Hungary and Germany, Dr. Winkler has a very diverse background. Fluent in three languages, he has practiced medicine in four countries on three different continents.  Dr. Winkler earned his medical degree from the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University, Medical School in Germany, with rotations at Harvard and University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. After medical training, he completed an internship in Germany at Humboldt Hospital in Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery, a research fellowship in Orthopedic Oncology at the Musculoskeletal Tumor Center in Bala Cynwyd, PA, General Surgery Residency at Temple University Hospital, and a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.
