Visiting Medical Students
The Medical University of South Carolina will begin accepting applications on May 1 for the upcoming academic year that begins in July.
MUSC offers a wide number of electives and externship experiences to medical students who are in the final year of their studies. Students must have successfully completed the basic core clerkships (Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry, and Family Medicine) in order to be eligible. All approvals are at the discretion of the department.
Approval notices are sent via email and will include additional information and requirements.
Students Applying from Accredited U.S. Medical Schools
Applications from students enrolled in LCME- or COCA-accredited U.S. medical schools can be submitted through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) beginning each year on May 1. Course offerings and application requirements will be available for students to review in VSAS by March 1.
Other Visiting Students
MUSC does not currently accept applications for clinical rotations from medical students who attend institutions that are not LCME- or COCA-accredited.
Underrepresented in Medicine Students
The Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship Program is a joint sponsorship by the MUSC College of Medicine Dean's Office and the Office of Diversity. The goal of this program is to recruit talented 4th year URM students to MUSC who have met all requirements for visiting student electives listed in VSAS. The program provides support for African-American, Native American, Hispanic and Pacific Islander students to participate in a variety of rotations throughout MUSC. The following departments currently participate in this program: Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery, OBGYN, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery.
