Emergency Medicine
EMED 822 Essentials of Emergency Medicine is required for all M.D. students in their final year. Students will work six nine-hour shifts during a four-week period in the Emergency Department as a member of the care team. The ED operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and shifts will be scheduled accordingly with a combination of day, evening, and overnight shifts. During each shift, students will interact with patients, learn how to perform an expeditious and focused H&P, order appropriate diagnostic tests, formulate a differential diagnosis, and treat and manage various illnesses and injuries.
