Program for Human Microbiome Research

Program for Human Microbiome Research is a community of investigators at Medical University of South Carolina with interests in the role of the community of microorganisms in human health.

Vision Statement: We enable personalized Health care by understanding of host-microbiome interactions in shaping health of individuals, communities, and populations.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to catalyze human health research by discovering actionable host and microbiome interactions in vivo, in vitro, and in silico.

As of late 2015 MUSC has developed key resources to enable on site implementation of complete microbiome research pipeline. These resources include

  • Consulting, research development, and mentorship services
  • Clinical research support
  • Laboratory support
  • Gnotobiotic animal facility
  • Specialized cores (metabolomics, lipidomics, etc.)
  • High-throughput technology (sequencing, proteomics, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry)
  • Bioinformatics
  • Data analysis and integration

Currently PHMR is focused on launching pilot studies to test drive the infrastructure for microbiome research on problems. The short-term goal of the program is to gain momentum for innovative precision medicine research based on microbiomic and other high-throughput patient characteristics. To this end, we are developing the Living Biome Bank, a system for just-in-time capture of clinical specimens suitable for microbiome research.
