Education & Training

Training and education within the National Crime Victims Research & Treatment Center (NCVRTC) take many forms. Since 1988, the NCVRTC has held a T32 training grant from NIMH that is dedicated to training independent researchers in adult and child traumatic stress. Topics of study generally coincide with faculty interests but cohere around two main topics: epidemiological risk and resilience associated with trauma exposure, and trauma treatment development and dissemination. More information about this program and how to apply is located on the NCVRTC Post-doctoral Training page.

The NCVRTC is also home to two rotations within the Charleston Consortium Psychology Internship Program. Our office-based NCVRTC Clinic provides psychology interns with exposure to evidence-based treatments for both adult and child/family trauma victims within a traditional outpatient setting. Our Community Outreach Program – Esperanza (COPE) Clinic provides evidence-based services to children and families using a community-based approach to service delivery and is designed for patients who face significant barriers to in-person treatment.

Our faculty regularly provide professional workshops, lead training collaboratives, and participate in other professional trainings related to traumatic stress treatment and research. NCVRTC faculty hold or have held leadership and/or editorial positions in several leading professional organizations including the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) and the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC). A team of NCVRTC faculty co-led the development of Project BEST, a statewide collaborative effort to disseminate and implement evidence-based child trauma treatment across South Carolina, and continue to manage its ongoing operation.

Finally, the NCVRTC is a global leader in online educational programs for clinical professionals. We have developed continuing education courses for evidence-based trauma treatments that are easy to use, cost-effective, and extremely popular with learners.
