Hollis Karoly, PhD – Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry Division of Addiction Science, Prevention, and Treatment University of Colorado School of Medicine
Dr. Katoly will discuss the growing prevalence and public health impact of alcohol and cannabis co-use in the United States, including evidence that simultaneous use is associated with heightened acute impairment and other adverse consequences. The presentation will examine the mixed evidence regarding whether cannabis substitutes for or complements alcohol use, drawing on epidemiological, naturalistic, and laboratory research. Finally, Dr. Karoly will highlight key gaps in the literature, including limited research on real-world cannabis products, understudied populations, and individual differences, and will outline research priorities to inform evidence-based guidance for consumers and healthcare providers regarding cannabis use in the context of alcohol consumption.
