Hormonal transitions across the reproductive lifespan reshape how the body responds to addictive substances (such as nicotine and opioids), influencing both treatment and return-to-misuse outcomes. This presentation traces that arc from the menstrual cycle through hormonal contraceptive use to the postpartum period, where infant caregiving itself may be protective. Drawing on prospective cohort and randomized data, and explores the idea that tailoring interventions to hormonal timing may lead to improved outcomes.
