Research Interests:

Dr. Gilkeson’s research focuses on the pathogenesis and treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus. Although there are significant involvements of the liver and the GI tract in lupus, his specific interest is in the role of “leaky gut” in the pathogenesis of lupus and whether this phenomenon is one of the predisposing factors leading to the 10/1 prevalence of lupus in women over men. A major project in the Gilkeson laboratory examines the role of two lupus genetic susceptibility loci that code for genes expressed almost exclusively in the intestine, and which are proposed to play a role in gut permeability. It is currently unknown whether the susceptibility allele in lupus is associated with increased, decreased, or no change in permeability.
