Research & Scholarship

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology leads a robust and wide-ranging research program that spans discovery science, translational work, and clinical investigation.

Our faculty conduct basic laboratory and animal studies, drug and device trials, and large-scale observational and epidemiologic research. Areas of focus include pancreaticobiliary and esophageal disorders, gastrointestinal cancers, nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and liver disease.

Division investigators lead multiple NIH-funded bench research programs and are currently conducting more than 100 active clinical studies.

National Leadership in Digestive and Liver Disease Research

MUSC is the only institution in the country to house both a Digestive Disease Research Core Center (DDRCC) and a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Digestive and Liver Diseases. This distinction reflects sustained excellence in digestive and liver disease research.

In 2025, both NIH-funded centers received successful five-year renewals:

These renewals underscore the strength of MUSC’s scientific leadership and the national impact of its research programs.

Collaboration Across MUSC

Research in the GI division is highly collaborative. Faculty work closely with investigators across MUSC, including the Hollings Cancer Center, an NCI-designated cancer center, and the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology. These partnerships expand scientific reach and accelerate progress from discovery to patient care.

National and International Recognition

MUSC GI faculty are widely recognized for their scholarly contributions. They hold leadership roles in major professional societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Their work continues to shape the future of gastroenterology and hepatology at the national and global levels.
