Division of Hospital Medicine

Dr. Patrick J. Cawley is the Chief Executive Officer of MUSC Health and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs of the Medical University of South Carolina. In this role, he oversees all clinical matters as they relate to MUSC.

During his leadership, MUSC has significantly expanded its clinical enterprise with a new Children's Hospital, a regional health network, multiple ambulatory sites, development of additional clinical affiliates, and numerous novel joint ventures. Additionally, MUSC has become a national leader in telehealth and has continued as South Carolina's #1 hospital/health system per US News and World Report. Under Dr. Cawley's leadership, MUSC continues to receive a number of quality awards across all domains of quality: safety, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, timeliness, and patient centeredness.

Previously, he served as the chief medical officer of MUSC Medical Center. In that role he was responsible for the quality and safety of all patient care programs as well as direct oversight of clinical service lines. He has led MUSC's improvement transformation in quality and patient safety, which was recognized by the University Healthsystem Consortium in 2007 and again in 2012 by awarding the coveted Rising Star honor to MUSC.

Dr. Cawley is a certified physician executive through the American College of Physician Executives and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a Fellow in the Liberty Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. He has been named one of America's Best Doctors. He has also been awarded the Master of Hospital Medicine from the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Dr. Cawley is a Past-President of the Society of Hospital Medicine. He is actively involved in leadership roles in the American Hospital Association, the South Carolina Hospital Association, America's Essential Hospitals, Vizient, and the health care collaborative, Initiant.

Dr. Cawley graduated from the University of Scranton. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University before completing an internal medicine residency at Duke University. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He is board certified in internal medicine with focused recognition in hospital medicine.

Dr. Marc Heincelman is an associate professor of medicine at MUSC, where he serves as Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine, Co-Vice Chair for Quality Improvement in the Department of Medicine, and Associate Dean for Career Advising in the College of Medicine.

He earned his undergraduate degree in rehabilitation sciences and athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh. Following a two-year Intramural Research Training Award Fellowship at the NIH, he received his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 2010. He then completed a combined internal medicine/pediatrics residency at MUSC, serving as chief resident before joining the faculty in 2015.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Heincelman is actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate medical education at MUSC. He previously served the College of Medicine as a Master Clinical Skills Teacher for five years and is a current member of the Academy of Medical Educators. From 2016-2024, Dr. Heincelman served as Department of Medicine Clerkship Director and Sub-internship Director. In 2024, he was appointed Assistant Dean for Career Advising within the College of Medicine, later advancing to Associate Dean in 2025. Nationally, he is a member of both the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor societies.

As core faculty for the internal medicine and med-peds residency programs, his educational focus includes clinical reasoning and career planning.

Dr. Heincelman’s success in education has been recognized through receipt of multiple Golden Apple Clinical Years Excellence in Teaching Awards through the College of Medicine, the Department of Medicine Michael E. Assay Teaching Award, and the MUSC Faculty Award Teaching Excellence Educator-Mentor Award.

From a quality improvement and research perspective, Dr. Heincelman has a master’s in public health in epidemiology. With over 30 publications, his research centers on interhospital transfers, clinical decision support tools, delirium, and tele-hospitalist support to rural hospitals with the overarching goal of improving inpatient patient care while optimizing clinician efficiency. Since 2021, he has been a co-investigator on a National Telehealth Center of Excellence grant funded by HRSA.

Program Director, Med-Psych Resident Program

Dr. Kalivas is an associate professor with dual appointment in the departments of Psychiatry and Medicine and now serves as Program Director for the Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Program. He graduated medical school from MUSC. He is a former chief resident of our med-psych program in 2016 and internal medicine chief resident in 2017. He then joined faculty at MUSC where he works as an academic hospitalist for the Department of Medicine and as part of the Brain Stimulation Service for the Department of Psychiatry. His research focus is detection and management of delirium in hospitalized patients. He also serves as the Medical Director for GME Quality and Safety, where he facilitates resident quality improvement projects and overall training culture at MUSC. He is passionate about education and a large part of the educational mission of both categorical and the combined training programs her at MUSC.

Danielle Scheurer, MD, MSCR is an adult Hospitalist physician, Professor of Medicine, and System Chief Quality Officer at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Health System. She completed undergraduate studies at Emory University, medical school at The University of Tennessee, and Medicine-Pediatrics residency training at Duke University. She then joined MUSC as a Hospitalist, and completed her Masters in Clinical Research. She then practiced as a Hospitalist and Medical Director of the Inpatient Medicine Services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for 5 years, before returning back to MUSC in 2010. She is also a certified trainer in Just Culture and TeamStepps, is a Lean-Six Sigma Black Belt, a Baldrige National Examiner, and a certified mediator.

As System Chief Quality Officer, she oversees all Quality-Safety, Regulatory, Population Health, and Value-Based Payment models for the system. She is passionate about instilling High Reliability principles throughout the healthcare system, to improve safety and quality across all sites for all patients, while simultaneously enabling team engagement for performance excellence.
