Resident Lecture Series

Monthly

The resident lecture series is a resident-driven educational series designed to teach core neurosurgical concepts geared toward the intern and junior-level neurosurgery residents. An emphasis is placed on teaching anatomy, pathophysiology, and current standards of care for common neurosurgical problems. In addition, core board review concepts are reviewed as applicable based on the current topic of discussion. Lectures are held on a monthly or twice-monthly basis, and are grouped based on subject area (e.g. cerebrovascular, tumor, spine, etc.). This is a dedicated and protected time for resident-driven education and board review.

Multi-Disciplinary Spine Conference

Monthly

MUSC Spine Conference provides residents, fellows and attendings in the areas of Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Spine Surgery, Neurology, Radiology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, and Rehabilitation Medicine an update on recent advances in the treatment of spinal diseases. Each session is approximately one hour of didactic teaching, with interdisciplinary case presentations and review of the current relevant peer-reviewed literature. There are periodic topic based lectures. We discuss the application of minimally invasive and open techniques to a multitude of spinal pathology, including the treatment of adult spinal deformity, spinal metastatic disease, degenerative conditions, vertebral fractures, and traumatic and infectious conditions of the spine.

Neuro-Trauma Conference

Monthly

MUSC Neuro-Trauma conference is a case-based, multidisciplinary teaching conference with participation from faculty in Neurosurgery, Neuro-Critical Care, and Trauma Surgery and Critical Care. Recent interesting or complex patient management scenarios are presented and reviewed by residents in Neurosurgery and General Surgery covering cranial, spinal and non-neurological trauma. Discussion is geared towards evidenced-based practices, updating current protocols and guidelines as well as optimizing system-based and patient-care pathways with opportunities for multidisciplinary quality improvement and/or research projects.

Tumor Board

Weekly: Thursdays, 1 p.m.

The Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board is a multidisciplinary weekly conference involving, Neuro-Oncology, Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, Neuro-Radiology, and Neuro-Pathology.  Patient cases involving brain, spine, or peripheral nerve malignancies, that are of academic interest or those requiring consensus plans of care, are reviewed. Data-driven treatment plans are tailored for each patient. The conference is also a teaching conference, attended by Neurosurgery residents, Radiation Oncology residents, Medical Oncology fellows, Radiology residents, Pathology residents, and medical students.
