The Legacy of Dr. Phanor L. Perot Jr.
Widely recognized as the "Father of Academic Neurosurgery in South Carolina," Dr. Perot joined MUSC in 1968 after completing his neurosurgical training and serving on the faculty at the internationally renowned Montreal Neurological Institute. There, he trained under legendary neurosurgeons Dr. Wilder Penfield, Dr. William Cone, and Dr. Theodore Rasmussen, pioneers whose influence helped shape modern neurological surgery.
Upon arriving at MUSC, Dr. Perot became the institution's first Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, a position he held for nearly thirty years (1968–1997). Under his leadership, the department evolved from a small surgical division into a nationally respected academic program recognized for excellence in clinical care, scientific discovery, and resident education. His tenure established MUSC as the premier center for neurosurgical care and training in South Carolina.
Advancing Neurosurgical Science
Dr. Perot's career was defined by an unwavering commitment to scientific inquiry. His pioneering research advanced the understanding and treatment of spinal cord injury, epilepsy, torticollis, and neurological trauma. His laboratory investigations, particularly those involving somatosensory evoked potential and acute spinal cord injury, earned decades of continuous funding from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and helped establish new standards of care for patients worldwide.
Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr. Perot was a gifted educator whose mentorship shaped generations of neurosurgeons. His philosophy emphasized intellectual curiosity, technical excellence, compassion, and the importance of understanding the historical foundations of neurosurgery.
A National and International Leader
Dr. Perot's influence extended well beyond MUSC. He served as President of the Society of Neurological Surgeons (SNS), President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, and founding Vice President of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. Through these leadership roles, he helped shape neurosurgical education, residency standards, and academic medicine across the United States and internationally.
