Choosing to be a part of the MUSC Athletic Trainer residency program was a “no-brainer” because of my personal goal of becoming a physician extender. I previously worked with orthopedic specialists in Charlotte, North Carolina and relocated here to Charleston in the summer of 2022 where I became a Cast technician with MUSC Orthopedics for 9 months. I was able to build a healthy relationship with team members and providers before even making the transition into this program, and I am eternally grateful for this. Choosing this program has allowed me to pursue my career goals in becoming a successful Orthopedic Physician Extender. With this residency I am constantly learning to master my orthopedic evaluations, patient care communications, and expand my existing knowledge more than I ever thought possible. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the MUSC Athletic Trainer Residency Program and it was the best decision professionally and personally.

I chose the MUSC AT Residency Program because I wanted to sharpen my clinical evaluation skills, particularly in orthopaedic conditions and injuries. MUSC stood out to me because it provides an educational environment that welcomes learning and professional growth.

The athletic training residency allowed me to fine tune my examination skills and become more efficient at reaching a diagnosis. Before I came to the residency program, I lacked the confidence that I needed to evaluate a patient and formulate an effective treatment plan for them. Now, I have confidence in my skills as well as my ability to create a treatment plan. I have learned about specialties that I never thought I would be able to experience, such as orthpaedic oncology and pediatric orthopaedics. I was challenged when I attended the resident lectures, as it required memorization and critical thinking skills that had not been developed prior to joining this program. The collaboration between athletic trainers, nurses, physician assistants and physicians encouraged me to feel comfortable inquiring about topics that I don’t have experience in. The experiences I got in the residency program is one that shapes me and my abilities as a clinician.
