About the Department of Orthopaedics & Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Charles Reitman, M.D. is a professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and serves as ICCE chief of Specialty Surgery and Spine at MUSC.

Dr. Reitman attended physical therapy school at the University of California San Francisco and was in private practice in Sacramento, CA, for 12 years. He then attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center, where he also completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery and fellowship training in spine surgery. Upon completing residency and fellowship training, Dr. Reitman accepted a faculty position at Baylor and remained in Houston. There, he quickly assumed the director of residency education role, a position he held throughout his tenure at Baylor.

Among several leadership roles, in 2003, Dr. Reitman became chief of orthopaedic surgery at the trauma center, Ben Taub Hospital, and served as the department's interim chairman for two years. He was the initial Faculty Teacher of the Year recipient in 2004 and received that honor five times in 11 years before his departure. He was recruited to Charleston in 2015 and is currently a professor and vice chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at MUSC and co-director of the MUSC Spine Center. He has clinical expertise across a broad range of complex spinal disorders from the head to the pelvis, including conditions resulting from degenerative disease, deformity including scoliosis and kyphosis, spine tumors, spine infections, spine fractures, and spinal cord injury, and also problems related to complications from injury as well as previous surgery.

Dr. Reitman has extensive experience in program development and mentoring. Dr. Reitman is a past president of the Houston Orthopaedic Society and is a member of numerous national and international societies. He has been a speaker on every continent except Antarctica. He has been particularly active in the North American Spine Society, where he has been a director of the Administration, Research, and Education councils for the Board of Directors and also helped launch the international educational platform.

Dr. Reitman has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and is Deputy Editor for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research and The Spine Journal. His top professional priority is the continued development of a nationally recognized multidisciplinary spine center that provides high-value and quality care efficiently and conveniently for our patients throughout South Carolina.

Dr. Christopher E. Gross completed a fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Surgery after completing his residency training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He graduated from Harvard Medical School. As an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Gross is particularly interested in complex reconstruction about the ankle in addition to cartilage injuries that range from small defects to end-stage ankle arthritis. He is also keenly interested in Achilles and other sports-related injuries. He is currently developing a multidisciplinary research division by harnessing the power of biologics and improved implant design, and drug delivery systems. He is the author of over 70 published journal articles, over 30 text book chapters.

Dr. Daniel Scott is an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Scott has extensive experience in total ankle replacements, sports injuries in athletes, post-traumatic reconstruction, fracture care, and complex deformity correction as well as advanced minimally invasive and joint preserving treatment options. As a native of the Carolinas, Dr. Scott graduated with a combined M.D. and MBA degree from Duke University, and went on to complete an orthopaedic surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center. Following this, he completed a fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. While at Duke, he was a resident team physician for Duke University athletics, as well as North Carolina Central and Northern High School. Throughout his training, Dr. Scott has received numerous awards for leadership and research. He has been published in a many nationally renowned peer-reviewed journals and has been selected as a reviewer for multiple journals. His work has been presented at numerous local, regional, national, and international meetings.

Lee Leddy, M.D.serves as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics & Physical Medicine and is Chief of the Musculoskeletal Integrated Center of Clinical Excellence (ICCE).

He received a bachelor’s degree in biological science from Emory University while also lettering on the varsity basketball team. He then received a medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Leddy returned to Emory University to complete his internship and residency in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He joined MUSC in 2009, after completing a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at Emory University, where he helped establish the sarcoma program.

Dr. Leddy is currently the leader of the Sarcoma Disease Focus Team at Hollings Cancer Center and serves as the residency program director for the Department of Orthopaedics. He is actively involved in both clinical and basic science research and collaborates with members of the Sarcoma Immunotherapy Lab. As a member of the MUSC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Leddy focuses on providing excellent care to patients with benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors and metastatic bone cancer, providing fracture care, and performing primary and revision hip and knee replacements.

Josef Eichinger, M.D., is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty focus in shoulder and elbow surgery. He is a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He was formally the chief of orthopaedic surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, and at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He is a retired Colonel from the US Army Medical Corps and previously deployed to Afghanistan with the 541st Forward Surgical Team. Dr. Eichinger received his undergraduate degree from the US Miliatary Academy at West Point and his MD Degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Madigan Army Medical Center and the Harvard shoulder and elbow surgery fellowship in Boston. He’s on the editorial board for the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Research and for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery for CME and is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Orthopedics, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Journal of Sports Medicine. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters.

Richard J Friedman, M.D., FRCSC, is the chief of shoulder and elbow surgery and Professor of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and an Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering at Clemson University. He received his MD in 1980 from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and completed residencies in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and in orthopaedic surgery at the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Residency Program in Boston. He also completed a clinical fellowship in surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore as well as clinical fellowships in surgery and orthopaedic surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery. He is a reviewer for multiple orthopaedic journals. Dr. Friedman was the founder of the orthopaedic research laboratory at MUSC and has received over 50 research grants. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles, written numerous book chapters, and has had over 150 scientific abstracts published. His special areas of interest focus on total joint replacement of the knee and shoulder, shoulder and elbow disorders, and arthroscopic surgery.

Dr. Hong is the Chief Physician Executive for MUSC Physicians and MUSC Health. In this position, he oversees the practice plan and serves as a senior leader in the health system. Hong is a leading authority on concussions, cardiac issues in athletes, overuse injuries and sports-injury prevention and has worked for decades as a team physician. He comes to MUSC from Drexel University in Philadelphia, where he was an endowed chair and professor in the Department of Family, Community and Preventive Medicine. He also served as chief of the division of primary care sports medicine, chair of the Drexel University Physician Board and associate dean for primary care and community health.

Medical Director

Dr. Pullen is a board-certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon with a clinical focus in sports medicine. Prior to joining MUSC, Dr. Pullen served as an orthopaedic surgeon and Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. He received is undergraduate degree from Christopher Newport University and his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He went on to complete his residency training at naval medical Center Portsmouth.

Harris Slone, M.D., is an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Slone specializes in the operative and non-operative treatment sports medicine injuries with a focus on arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder and knee. He attended medical school at the University of Virginia. He completes residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, and was later recruited to join the faculty after completing his fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at Emory University. Dr. Slone has helped provide care to several collegiate and professional teams, including Emory and Georgia Tech University (NCAA), the Charleston Riverdogs (MiLB), the Charleston Battery (USL), and the Atlanta Falcons (NFL). He is currently a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Emerging Leaders. As an active clinician scientist, he has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters as well as presented his research at national and international meetings. He is accepting new patients currently at MUSC Health locations.
