The athletic training residency allowed me to fine tune my examination skills and become more efficient at reaching a diagnosis. Before I came to the residency program, I lacked the confidence that I needed to evaluate a patient and formulate an effective treatment plan for them. Now, I have confidence in my skills as well as my ability to create a treatment plan. I have learned about specialties that I never thought I would be able to experience, such as orthpaedic oncology and pediatric orthopaedics. I was challenged when I attended the resident lectures, as it required memorization and critical thinking skills that had not been developed prior to joining this program. The collaboration between athletic trainers, nurses, physician assistants and physicians encouraged me to feel comfortable inquiring about topics that I don’t have experience in. The experiences I got in the residency program is one that shapes me and my abilities as a clinician.
