Program Description
As the only integrated academic health sciences center in South Carolina, MUSC offers unparalleled exposure to common and rare hematolymphoid entities (benign and malignant) across all age groups. We support pediatric and adult heme-onc services, including an active bone marrow transplant team.
Our hematopathology division is a high-volume, clinical service providing expert interpretations on 3,500 flow cytometry studies, 600 second-opinion consults, 1,500 bone marrow biopsies, 2,000 PB smears, and 300-500 tissue cases, annually.
A multi-modal, evidence-based approach integrating morphology, 10-color flow cytometry (including exposure to MRD panels), IHC, and genetics (including microarray-based CNV analysis, conventional karyotype, FISH, NGS) is used to generate precise/accurate comprehensive diagnostic reports, in the context of clinicoradiologic findings.
Understanding the challenging environment, fellows have protected/dedicated preview time to maximize and ensure a rewarding educational experience; daily interactive sign-out sessions with highly-skilled, enthusiastic/engaging, board-certified hematopathology staff reinforce key concepts. Complex cases are discussed at weekly multi-disciplinary pediatric and adult tumor boards where fellow participation is required to develop invaluable presentation skills. Research projects are encouraged and supported using the wealth of resources available. Graduates of our program are well-suited for careers in academia, industry, or private practice. Regular, in-depth flow cytometry didactic sessions are provided throughout the year. Brief (up to 1 week) rotations/didactics coagulation, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, and hematology are also integral program components.
