Division of Psychiatry Hospitalists

Explore innovative inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care, education, and research shaping the future of behavioral health.

The Psychiatry Hospitalist Division (PHD) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences was founded in 2012 and is the home to more than a dozen faculty members that specialize in the delivery of state-of-the-art inpatient and intensive outpatient psychiatry treatment in an academic setting. The division has been a leader in developing a hospital-based academic enterprise that capitalizes on the rich education and research opportunities present in these areas.

The Psychiatry Hospitalist faculty are largely based in the 100-bed Institute of Psychiatry and the affiliated intensive outpatient programs for children and adults. The inpatient units provide evidence-based and specialty-specific care across the full spectrum of psychiatric illnesses. Specialty-trained and boarded faculty work in designated areas, including units designed to deliver specialized care in the following areas; geriatrics, child & adolescent, addictions, acute care, as well as the general adult population.

Faculty in this division provide classroom and clinical instruction across all four years in the College of Medicine as well for all seven of the department’s GME training programs, and they are regularly recognized for their outstanding education and supervision of medical students, psychiatry residents and fellows, and students from other colleges within MUSC.

The division is engaged in collaborative research endeavors evaluating the impact of both standard and novel treatments interventions in an acutely ill psychiatric patient population.
