The Division of Acute Care Surgery delivers compassionate care to patients with acute illness and injury, including burn injuries, through a multidisciplinary team committed to excellence.

The Division of Acute Care, Trauma and Burn team.

Our dedicated team of surgeons and researchers advance the science and the treatment of our patients and their diseases, while working to decrease the burden of injury and surgical disease through prevention, outreach and education.

  • As a Level I Trauma Center, we received the highest national recognition for trauma centers through the American College of Surgeons. We are the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the Lowcountry. This designation means we have teams of experts who stand ready to care for people with the most severe injuries and sudden, dangerous illnesses, including internal bleeding.
  • The South Carolina Burn Center at MUSC Health - Our burn care specialists, led by Steven Kahn, M.D., are award-winning, recognized experts in burn care.
  • Our trauma team is staffed around the clock, led by a trauma surgeon with board certification in both surgery and surgical critical care.
  • Our surgeons are Board Certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. We perform complex hernia repairs, laparoscopic operations, and chest wall reconstructions as well as innovative care for burn patients.
  • Our Surgical Critical Care Fellowship has a 100% Board Pass Rate | 100 % Match Rate | 100% Job Placement. Learn more about our Fellowship Program

We sincerely hope you never require treatment for a traumatic injury or illness.

Through our research, community outreach programs, and injury prevention activities, we’re working hard to reduce the number of trauma patients in our area, helping residents and visitors live longer, healthier lives.
