CT Surgery Residency

Learn more about our Cardiothoracic Surgery Integrated Residency Program from our program directors and residents.

Founded in 2009, the MUSC Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgical Residency Program pioneered the integrated six-year integrated residency along with Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania. The program matches residents out of medical school at the PGY-1 level. Upon completion of our residency program, residents are eligible to sit for ABTS certification.

Our residency is a comprehensive training program which prepares residents in all aspects of adult cardiac, congenital cardiac and general thoracic surgery. Our dedicated faculty work directly with residents in outpatient clinics, hospital wards, intensive care units, and the operating room. Throughout the training, residents practice with graded autonomy in patient care and operative procedures. Clinical experiences are complemented by a rich academic environment which includes an intensive didactic program, research activities, and attendance at national meetings.

The clinical preparedness of graduates from our I-6 program may be best measured by the fact that each of our 6 graduates since the maturation of our program have passed their written and oral board exams on the first attempt, received multiple job offers, and have proven themselves as competent thoracic surgeons as they entered independent clinical practice.
