Program Overview

The Urologic Oncology Fellowship offers a comprehensive and immersive training experience designed to cultivate expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genitourinary malignancies.

Fellows work alongside our experienced urologic oncology faculty, gaining invaluable hands-on experience while receiving individualized mentorship and progressive operative autonomy based on demonstrated competency in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Training Experience

Each fellow participates in more than 300 major oncologic procedures.

Inside the Program

Fellows gain experience across the full spectrum of urologic oncology, including:

  • Exceptional exposure to a broad range of surgical approaches and procedures
    • Advanced open surgery
    • Laparoscopic surgery
    • Multi-port robotic surgery
    • Single-port robotic surgery
    • Focal therapy for prostate cancer
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Multidisciplinary tumor boards
  • Clinical research

This comprehensive experience prepares graduates to independently manage highly complex urologic oncology cases and develop into leaders in the field of urologic oncology.

Clinical Experience

Operative Experience

The fellowship provides a high-volume and high-complexity operative experience.

The average case distribution for our fellows includes:

  • 65-70 robotic-assisted radical prostatectomies

  • 40-45 robotic partial nephrectomies, using transabdominal and retroperitoneal access
  • 50 radical cystectomies with urinary diversion, both open and robotic, including exposure to continent diversions, intracorporeal urinary diversions, and cutaneous ureterostomies
  • 25-30 single-port cases, including extraperitoneal radical prostatectomies, transvesical radical prostatectomies, and retroperitoneal partial nephrectomies
  • 45-50 complex open retroperitoneal cases, including:
    • 6-8 retroperitoneal lymph node dissections
    • 8-10 inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombectomies
    • 10-12 open partial nephrectomies
  • 10-12 inguinal lymph node dissections or dynamic sentinel lymph node biopsies
  • 25-30 laparoscopic radical nephrectomies, conventional laparoscopy and hand-assisted
  • 10-15 focal therapy cases

Approximately 30% of the cases involve complex open surgical procedures, allowing fellows to train extensively in advanced open techniques and minimally invasive surgery.

Outpatient Rotations

Fellows rotate through the outpatient clinics of all core fellowship faculty, gaining broad exposure to the evaluation, treatment, and longitudinal care of patients with urologic malignancies.

Independent Call

Fellows take independent call with the urology group as part of their clinical responsibilities.

Oncology Tumor Board

Fellows participate in a weekly, multidisciplinary genitourinary tumor board. These conferences bring together specialists from urology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, and radiology to review complex genitourinary cancer cases and discuss multidisciplinary treatment strategies.

Research

Research is encouraged throughout the fellowship. While clinical training is the priority, the fellowship curriculum includes protected research time.

Fellows are expected to participate in scholarly work. They are encouraged to reach out to faculty about ongoing research projects and opportunities for collaboration.

Each fellow receives a $5,000 educational fund, which may be used for books, educational materials, meeting registration, or travel.
