Program Overview
TARP provides individualized advising and support for high school, undergraduate, and post-baccalaureate or gap year students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Through TARP, students meet virtually with members of the MUSC College of Medicine PRIME Division to better understand the path to medical school, identify areas for growth, and create a plan based on where they are in their educational journey.
There is no single path to medical school, and the type of guidance a student needs changes over time. TARP advising is tailored to the student's current stage of preparation.
How TARP Works
Students meet virtually with a PRIME advisor for 30-minute individualized advising sessions. Meetings may focus on academics, pre-med experiences, MCAT preparation, application planning, or other areas based on the student's current needs.
After each session, students leave with an action plan and resources to help them continue making progress. TARP participants may also be connected with current MUSC medical students and other resources or opportunities related to mentoring, shadowing, research, community engagement, and preparation for medical school.
PRIME recommends the following advising schedule based on the student’s stage of preparation:
- High School Students: Two sessions per year, one during the fall semester and one during the spring semester
- College Freshmen and Sophomores: Two sessions per year, near the end of the fall and spring semesters
- College Juniors, Seniors, Post-Baccalaureate and Gap Year Students: Four sessions per year
- Medical School Applicants: At least two mock interview sessions after submitting their application
