Message From Dr. Scott Reeves

The Department of Anesthesia's “can-do” mentality along with all that our beautiful city has to offer creates a wonderful environment in which to train, work and live.

Community Engagement

LOWVELO

LOWVELO is a year-long fundraiser by MUSC to raise money for cancer research at our MUSC Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston. This culminates in a bike "race" of varying distances (10-100 miles) to continue raising money with support from donors. Drs. Joseph Abro and Joel Sirianni have participated in LOWVELO each year along with their wives, friends, and other MUSC faculty. We hope to continue the tradition by recruiting our residents and faculty!

Toys for Tots

Each December the MUSC Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine department sets up donation boxes in our office areas and at our holiday party for a Toys for Tots toy drive. In 2023, we collected 3 large boxes of toys for children in our area!

Swim Across America Kiawah

In 2024, the MUSC Sevo Sharks raised $5,445 for Ferreira Lab at Hollings Cancer Center and the event itself raised over $105,000!

The 1.5-mile open ocean swimmers included Nicole McCoy, MD (Peds Anesthesia), Chris Heine, MD (Peds Anesthesia), Karin Bierling-Slowey (CRNA), Robert Cromley (CRNA), and Haley Nitchie (Anesthesia Research Coordinator). The 0.5-mile open ocean swimmers included Angela Choi (OB) and Sinai Zyblewski (Peds Cardiology).

Dr. McCoy says, "We had a great time on gorgeous Kiawah Island despite some tough, wavy conditions. Mark your calendars to join, donate, or volunteer next June!"

American Heart Association "Heart Walk"

The Anesthesia Department puts together a team each year for the local Heart Walk in February. This year, the Anesthesia "Sleep Walkers" raised over $1,130! Different fundraisers around the department for the Heart Walkers have ranged from Penny Wars (change drive) to a raffle for an afternoon at Charleston's new Top Golf!
