The Fellowship

The Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship is a program organized through the Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in collaboration with OneWorld Health. The purpose of this Fellowship is to promote hands-on clinical field experience, educational initiatives, and research pertinent to the advancement of Global Emergency Medicine.

This Fellowship is an Endowed Fellowship (The Edward C. O'Bryan, Jr., M.D. Fellowship in Global Health) and is one of only two endowed fellowships at MUSC. It has been in existence since 2015 and is available to Global Emergency Medicine Fellows in the Department of Emergency Medicine who meet certain travel, research, and clinical care criteria to serve at-risk populations locally and around the world. The Endowment is under the direction of the Global Emergency Medicine Division in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

We are looking for flexible, dynamic, motivated individuals. The goal of our fellowship is to give you the experience and training to allow you to pursue your long-term global health goals. Whether you would like to gain a breadth of exposure to the pillars of global health (refugee health, direct clinical care, research, education, or systems development) or to focus your fellowship in a particular area, the strength of our program is the flexibility we allow. We also understand the importance of developing your own practice in your first year(s) as an attending. You have the option to pursue a one- or two-year fellowship with us.

In 2021, the Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship began participating in the NRMP. We will be accepting applications during the match season in the Fall of 2025 to start in July 2026.

Resident Opportunities

Global Health Resident Track at MUSC

As a resident at MUSC, you have the opportunity to participate in a longitudinal global emergency medicine elective over your three years. This is a great chance to develop a “niche” within emergency medicine and individual mentoring to better prepare you to pursue global emergency medicine fellowship or an introduction to pursue global emergency medicine on your own. Upon meeting the below requirements, you will graduate with an additional certificate in Global Emergency Medicine. We will assist with the development of global health opportunities, global health research and scholarly projects, provide didactic teaching and mentorship for future careers in Global Health.

Year one:

• Attend and participate in 60% of all monthly journal clubs
• Present at least one journal club article

Year two:

• Attend and participate in 60% of all monthly journal club
• Present at least one journal club article
• Complete a one-week global health or community health clinical experience. Options for this include:
  • 5 days of local outreach (health fairs, CARES clinic, CPR training,  local fire/EMS training, asylum exam certification and participation in asylum clinic)
  • Short-term overseas medical outreach (OneWorld Health or other as agreed upon by the Global Health Fellowship Director)*

*any overseas time would be using vacation days

Year three:

• Attend and participate in 60% of all monthly journal club
• Present at least one journal club articleComplete a one-month global health elective. Options include:
  • One-month overseas elective at pre-approved affiliated sites
  • Research elective in global health
  • Tropical medicine elective
• By the end of 3rd year you will need to have completed one academic project in global health (*note this same project can count toward your residency scholarly project or your CQI project for residency graduation)

Funding for Elective Global Travel for Students and Residents:

Each year, the Center of Global Health awards one EM Resident a stipend of up to $3000 toward an International Emergency Medicine Global Health project with OneWorld Health. The Resident may choose from sites in Uganda or Nicaragua. The scholarship is merit-based.

Additionally, there is an excellent opportunity for funding for travel through MUSC’s Center for Global Health which awards scholarships on a semi-annual basis in the spring and fall for elective projects and travel.

Each year, the Global Emergency Medicine track selects an intern of the year which also awards $500 to travel with OneWorld Health during senior global health elective. Congratulations to Dr. Katherine Rodriguez who won the award this past year!
