Critical Care Research Program

The Section of Critical Care contains a robust and varied research portfolio while providing mentorship for students and trainees at all levels.

The MUSC Critical Care Research Program offers a collaborative, academically driven environment where fellows, residents, medical students, and faculty work alongside nationally recognized investigators to improve outcomes for critically ill patients. Our research spans the full continuum of critical care, from prevention and early intervention to recovery after critical illness, while translating discoveries into better patient care.

Faculty expertise includes multicenter clinical trials, digital health and telehealth, implementation science, quality improvement, large-scale data analytics, and artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Current research focuses on:

  • Sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
  • Clinical decision support and digital technologies to improve care delivery and reduce clinician burnout
  • ICU recovery and post-intensive care outcomes
  • AI-driven approaches to phenotyping and managing respiratory failure

Our investigators lead and collaborate on federally funded research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and other federal agencies, as well as select industry-sponsored studies. Faculty also hold leadership roles within national organizations, including the American Thoracic Society (ATS), CHEST, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the American College of Physicians (ACP), and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

For trainees interested in academic pulmonary and critical care medicine, MUSC provides outstanding opportunities for research mentorship, scholarly collaboration, and career development, preparing the next generation of physician-scientists and clinical investigators.
