Neurology Residency Schedule

Schedule

  • Our residents’ schedule operates on a 4-week block system, allowing for 13 blocks within a calendar year.
  • Residents rotate between inpatient and outpatient services, with overnight coverage managed through a night float system.
  • The program offers a generous amount of elective time, totaling approximately 12 blocks over 3 years. Residents have significant autonomy in scheduling their elective time, enabling them to customize the program according to their individual interests and career goals.

Sample Schedule

PGY2:

  • Inpatient rotations: 6 to 8 weeks each on inpatient General Neurology, Stroke Neurology, VA Neurology services.
  • Supplementary rotations: 4 weeks are dedicated to rotations in our state-of-the-art Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) and Pediatric Neurology Consult Service.
  • Additional rotation: 4 continuous weeks of EEG training are required.
  • Remaining time: 5 to 6 weeks of Night float, as well as 10 to 12 weeks of protected outpatient subspecialty elective time.

PGY3/4:

  • Inpatient rotations: 2 to 4 weeks per year on inpatient General Neurology, Stroke Neurology, VA Neurology, Consult Service, Pediatric Neurology, and night float.
  • Additional rotation: 4 weeks are dedicated to our Wellness & Education rotation (includes medical student education and backup call coverage).
  • Remaining time: Outpatient subspecialty elective rotations.

Educational Activities

Residents participate in numerous educational activities throughout the week. The main resident educational conference is a daily noon conference where faculty discuss specific disease-related topics. Additionally, there are twice-weekly morning report sessions (case conferences) and weekly grand rounds. Further educational experiences include monthly offerings of neuroradiology conference and journal club, as well as quarterly Neurogenetics and Neuropathology conferences.
