Our resident physicians make up the next generation of physician-scientists. In addition to offering recurring didactics we are laying the groundwork for investigative research; thus, we have developed a structured, customized approach to mentoring each resident.
Beginning in the PGY1, residents are encouraged to explore their clinical and research interests. As they gain more clinical neurosurgery exposure and begin engaging in research projects, we help them to home-in on a research focus that they are passionate about. We help them to learn how to ask the right questions, then guide them to find the answers. Once the resident has found that area of interest, our core research faculty meet with them regularly throughout the PGY 2-4 to provide oversight and guidance as they develop their research area of interest. It is during this time that the methodology and a detailed timeline of the research years (PGY5/6) are developed, and grant funding options are explored and ultimately secured. Beyond the core research mentorship faculty, we pair the resident with thought leaders in their area of interest - be it here on campus or anywhere in the world! We are here to support the resident to be successful in their research endeavors and help them to launch a successful career in academic neurosurgery.
We are very proud of the research that our residents are performing. They are becoming leaders in their respective areas and having a major impact in the field. We believe this structured research mentorship curriculum is a major draw for the residency training program and has greatly enhanced the education of our trainees and provides a stepping-stone for their future success in investigative research.
