The Maternal‑Fetal Medicine (MFM) Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina is a three‑year, ACGME‑accredited training program that prepares fellows for academic and clinical leadership in high‑risk obstetrics and prenatal diagnosis. The curriculum is structured to meet the clinical and scholarly requirements outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), including completion of a defended research thesis.
Fellows are engaged in 18 months of core clinical training, six months of elective clinical rotations, and 12 months of protected research time. Clinical experiences include management of high‑risk antepartum and intrapartum care, advanced prenatal diagnosis, ultrasound and fetal imaging, and multidisciplinary consultation. Fellows participate fully in weekly didactics, case conferences, research meetings, and departmental educational activities tailored to maternal‑fetal medicine.
State‑of‑the‑Art Training Facilities
Training takes place at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion, a flagship tertiary care perinatal center that seamlessly integrates obstetrical, fetal, and pediatric services. The facility features a Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, dedicated obstetrical operating rooms, and a high‑risk labor and delivery service designed to support complex maternal and fetal care.
Our ambulatory practice includes comprehensive care for high‑risk pregnancies through the Prenatal Wellness Center, an AIUM‑certified diagnostic hub providing advanced imaging, fetal echocardiography, 3‑D/4‑D ultrasonography, and prenatal genetic counseling. Diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS) are integrated into fellows’ training.
The Advanced Fetal Care Center serves as the regional referral destination for pregnancies complicated by fetal anomalies or conditions requiring specialized perinatal planning. Multidisciplinary teams coordinate individualized care plans that span prenatal diagnosis through delivery and neonatal transition.
Participate in Research
During protected research blocks, fellows work with dedicated faculty mentors to design and complete a hypothesis‑driven research project, with the objective of presenting at national scientific meetings and publishing in peer‑reviewed journals. These scholarly activities align with ACGME core requirements for research education, methodology, and academic dissemination.
Application Process
All applications must be submitted through ERAS, and positions will be filled through the NRMP Match. We follow the SMFM Program Directors Network application timeline, available at Maternal Fetal Medicine-Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine
