Welcome to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) PM&R Residency Program.

As the inaugural program director, it is with great excitement that I introduce you to our residency program! Our residency program has been thoughtfully designed to foster an environment conducive to providing strong mentorship, training well-rounded physiatrists to become future leaders in the field, and promoting research excellence. We offer a comprehensive curriculum that balances hands-on experience, didactic learning, and professional development. Intern year provides a strong foundation that will prepare our residents to care for the breadth of pathology that they will encounter in PM&R; PGY2-4 offers an ideal mix of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation experience.

We have an outstanding faculty team with diverse expertise in physiatry. Our division is strongly supported by the Department of Orthopedics and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, under the leadership of Department Chair Lee Leddy, MD. Our Division Chief, Ameet Nagpal, MD, is a passionate advocate for both our team and the field of physiatry. Both Dr. Leddy and Dr. Nagpal lead by example and are deeply committed to resident education and the continued success of the PM&R program at MUSC.

Last but not least, Charleston is a great place to live! The city offers something for all ages and interests – fantastic restaurants, local breweries, year-round farmers’ markets, museums, shopping, concerts, and of course plenty of sun and sand at one of our many beaches! Mission

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency training program at the Medical University of South Carolina is committed to training future leaders in the field of physiatry by providing superior academic and clinical education, engaging learners to develop an understanding of research implementation, providing high-quality interdisciplinary rehabilitative care to a diverse patient population, and fostering a dedication to lifelong learning and teaching.

Program Aims

1. Guide residents as they strive toward their professional goals, in a variety of clinical settings, ensuring they have the educational resources, clinical experiences, and skills to excel in their chosen career path within physiatry. 
2. Foster a learning environment to allow residents to demonstrate competency in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and system-based practice.
3. Provide resources that encourage residents to develop self-reflection skills focusing on areas of opportunity and growth, enabling their ability to become lifelong learners that will pass along their knowledge to their patients, caregivers, and other medical providers.
4. Create environments for residents to connect with other health professionals and rehabilitation colleagues to develop their skills as rehabilitation team leaders, while providing high-quality, innovative, patient- and family-centered health care.
5. Provide a variety of clinical experiences for residents to gain an understanding of the foundations of PM&R which form the basis of an evidence-based clinical practice and lifelong continuing medical education as well as to gain an understanding of healthcare systems and administration to advocate for and deliver high quality, cost effective, ethical patient care.
