Mission Statement

The Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship Mission at MUSC is to provide physicians with the skills needed to gain expertise in all forms of child maltreatment through education, patient care, research, and community partner collaboration. This patient centered care is through the Child Advocacy Centers and MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

How to Apply

  • The Fellowship in Child Abuse Pediatrics (CAP), accredited through the American Board of Pediatrics and ACGME, is a specialized training program designed to provide and refine knowledge and skills regarding the care of children who may have experienced abuse or neglect. Candidates must complete a three-year residency in General Pediatrics to be eligible. The fellowship program is three year.
  • MUSC’s Child abuse Pediatrics (CAP) fellowship was initiated in 2011 and is approved to accept 1 fellow per training year. Applicants to the Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship are selected through the National Resident Matching Program with Applications Processed through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS System). All Application materials must be received by the Fall match deadline listed by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
  • Application Requirements:
    • A completed application form through ERAS
    • Current photograph
    • Medical school transcript
    • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG) certificate number and visa information, if a foreign medical graduate
    • Three letters of recommendation from physicians familiar with your professional work
    • Curriculum Vitae (as part of ERAS application)
    • USMLE scores. Successful applicants must have passed all three portions of the USMLE prior to beginning fellowship
    • Personal Statement

Our program will participate in the NRMP for fellowship each year unless otherwise listed on the NRMP website. The timetable for the Web-base match changes slightly each year. Refer to the NRMP website for each year’s timetable. The Fall Match will occur in the month of December.

Fellowship Curriculum

Fellow meets with CAP attendings weekly for didactic sessions. In addition, the CAP division meeting occurs monthly to include a variety of speakers both within and outside the CAP division. Access to articles, lectures and protocols through didactics, guest speakers, Pedialink and Helfer Society resources. Journal club and peer review occur monthly within the division.

Every fellow will design and implement a research project during their fellowship with the assistance of a Scholarly Oversight Committee with faculty from both Child Abuse Pediatrics and subspecialty related to the research project. Fellows are expected to submit their research project to a national meeting for presentation. Cost of travel and conference supported by the fellowship. First year fellows attend an introduction to research conference, hosted by the Kempe Center in Denver, CO. Cost for travel, hotel and conference supported by the fellowship.

  1. Journal Club- monthly journal club within the division, lead by the fellow and CAP attendings.
  2. Peer Review- monthly formal peer review. Additionally, peer review independently as each fellow progresses through the fellowship.
  3. Additional teaching opportunities within the College of Medicine and Pediatric Residency

The Child Abuse Division is an outpatient and inpatient consult service. We currently have 4 outpatient clinics with 2 additional telemedicine clinics. The fellow will mainly see patients in the Dee Norton Child Advocacy Centers in Charleston County and Kay Phillips Advocacy Center in Summerville. The inpatient consult service covers consults at Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, a level I trauma hospital. Consults are completed in the emergency department, pediatric floor, PICU and burn unit. Fellows will also gain experience with the PSANE team in the emergency department.
