Our Team

Dr. Susan Evenhouse attended the MUSC where she graduated in 2017. She was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society and served as the President of the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at MUSC and is board certified in both specialties. After completion of her residency, she served as Internal Medicine Chief Resident before accepting a faculty position in the Division of General Internal Medicine. 

Dr. Marc Heincelman is an associate professor of medicine at MUSC, where he serves as Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine, Co-Vice Chair for Quality Improvement in the Department of Medicine, and Associate Dean for Career Advising in the College of Medicine.

He earned his undergraduate degree in rehabilitation sciences and athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh. Following a two-year Intramural Research Training Award Fellowship at the NIH, he received his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 2010. He then completed a combined internal medicine/pediatrics residency at MUSC, serving as chief resident before joining the faculty in 2015.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Heincelman is actively involved in both undergraduate and graduate medical education at MUSC. He previously served the College of Medicine as a Master Clinical Skills Teacher for five years and is a current member of the Academy of Medical Educators. From 2016-2024, Dr. Heincelman served as Department of Medicine Clerkship Director and Sub-internship Director. In 2024, he was appointed Assistant Dean for Career Advising within the College of Medicine, later advancing to Associate Dean in 2025. Nationally, he is a member of both the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor societies.

As core faculty for the internal medicine and med-peds residency programs, his educational focus includes clinical reasoning and career planning.

Dr. Heincelman’s success in education has been recognized through receipt of multiple Golden Apple Clinical Years Excellence in Teaching Awards through the College of Medicine, the Department of Medicine Michael E. Assay Teaching Award, and the MUSC Faculty Award Teaching Excellence Educator-Mentor Award.

From a quality improvement and research perspective, Dr. Heincelman has a master’s in public health in epidemiology. With over 30 publications, his research centers on interhospital transfers, clinical decision support tools, delirium, and tele-hospitalist support to rural hospitals with the overarching goal of improving inpatient patient care while optimizing clinician efficiency. Since 2021, he has been a co-investigator on a National Telehealth Center of Excellence grant funded by HRSA.

Dr. Nathalie Malcolm is a dual-board certified pediatrician and internist, she cares for patients of all ages and backgrounds - from newborns to senior citizens. She is a member of the American College of Physicians and is board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics. Special medical interests include pediatric and adult hypertension, obesity medicine, and fitness. 

Program Director

 Dr. Urban completed her residency and fellowship training at the Medical University of South Carolina. Her academic interests outside of palliative and hospice care include transitional medicine in adult and pediatric primary care and global health outreach and education. She currently serves as a faculty advisor for the National Med-Peds Residents' Association (NMPRA) and is a member of the Association of Med-Peds Physicians (AMPP).

Dr. Jacob Vaught attended the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. He went on to complete his residency training in the combined specialty of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med-Peds) at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine. After residency, Dr. Vaught joined MUSC's Internal Medicine and Pediatrics clinic, where he enjoys caring for patients across all stages of life-from newborns to older adults.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: On my interview day, both the residents and program leadership were so warm and friendly which made me feel truly welcomed. Additionally, as a large academic health center with strong Internal Medicine and Pediatric programs, I knew I would receive a very well-rounded education that would prepare me for any and all of my career aspirations. I was also really impressed with the new Med-Peds clinic and opportunities for community outreach.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: I know it is cliché, but truly the people! MUSC as an institution is such a special place filled with some of the kindest, most compassionate people. I realized early on in medical school that I really looked up to the Med-Peds residents and wanted to be a part of their family. Dr. Mennito and the program as a whole has a great reputation on campus. They were always so welcoming to me, offering advice and mentorship at every step. I tried not to be biased during the interview season, but nothing compared to the opportunities here. I could not be prouder to be a part of MUSC Med-Peds!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: It truly checked all of my boxes. Med-Peds colleagues who were clearly passionate about their program, supportive program leadership, two strong categorical programs with great facilities, people who prioritized life both in and out of the hospital, and the patient population. Residents and faculty were warm and welcoming on my interview day, and clearly showed how happy they were at MUSC. I knew no doors would be closed by training at MUSC, and also knew the wide scope of patients and pathologies would push me out of my comfort zone to become the best possible physician, no matter what I choose to pursue!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: In addition to MUSC hitting all my personal requirements for a residency program (having a Med-Peds clinic, a wide-ranging patient population, etc.), I chose MUSC Med-Peds because of how friendly and welcoming everyone was. On interview day, I enjoyed talking to both faculty and current residents. I had never been to Charleston before, but I felt so welcomed by everyone I talked to! I knew I wanted to train at a place where learning was not only encouraged but also supported, and MUSC fit that perfectly. I was able to visit before making my rank list and had such a great time touring the hospital and getting to meet a few residents - the rest is history!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: From the very beginning, every interaction I had with MUSC felt warm and personal. The pre-interview social was a great experience. The residents were welcoming, asked thoughtful questions that reflected our individual interests, and clearly enjoyed spending time together. Interview day just built on that feeling. My interviewers were kind and curious, and they truly took an interest in my journey and passions, not just in what I had done but in who I was and what I cared about. Why MUSC Med-Peds: I never imagined that I would move across the country from my family and friends for residency; however, after my interview day with the Med-Peds team at MUSC, I felt an incomparable sense of excitement. It was actually my last interview of the season, and I had unknowingly saved the best for last. It felt like it could be my new home away from home. I truly had no doubt in my mind that the fantastic leaders and my co-residents would care about me, support me, and encourage me to be the best physician and person I could be. That was really all I could ask for in a residency program, and it was a huge bonus that this new adventure would be in one of the most beautiful places in the United States. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to continue to learn and serve here.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: I ultimately chose MUSC because of the strong sense of community and friendship both within the MedPeds department and categorical programs that I could almost tangibly feel during my interview day! The program also checked all of my boxes academically, from strong channels for mentorship, a wide variety of subspecialty exposure on both sides, a free-standing children’s hospital, commitment to advocacy and community engagement, and a strong MedPeds identity on campus. Location-wise, I couldn’t be happier to be 10 minutes from the beach and closer to family!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: MUSC was my number one from day one because of the people! Dr. Mennito, Dr. Hagood, and the incredible Med-Peds residents, many of whom I had the opportunity to work with as a medical student at MUSC, are the reason I fell in love with Med-Peds as a specialty. From my days as a student, they welcomed me like family, invested in my growth, and showed me what a truly supportive program looks like, and now as an intern, I get to experience that same culture firsthand. Between the incredible breadth of pathology on both the medicine and pediatric sides and getting to live in Charleston, MUSC had everything I was looking for and truly is my dream program!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: I chose MUSC because I was looking for a large hospital system where I could see a wide variety of pathologies while still being part of a close-knit community. I was also drawn to the established global health curriculum with its continuity experience and immersive trip abroad. Hearing Dr. Malcom share her HEART acronym at the NMPRA Program highlights really solidified that MUSC was the right fit for me.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: I chose MUSC for its strong commitment to community service, advocacy, and global health, which offered opportunities to grow as a physician beyond the hospital setting. I was also drawn to the welcoming resident community (the social where I most wanted to be on the other side of the zoom screen) and the chance to return to the Carolinas to care for patients from communities similar to those that shaped me.
