Improving PTSD and Addiction through Clinical Research and Treatment

Led by Dr. Sudie Back, the IMPACT Lab at the Medical University of South Carolina conducts clinical and translational research focused on the intersecting experiences of trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders.
The IMPACT Lab uses ever-evolving, cutting-edge science to understand the underlying mechanisms of these experiences, improve treatments for these conditions, and translate research findings into meaningful advances in clinical care. The lab is committed to helping people whose lives have been affected by trauma and addiction not only to recover but thrive, while creating an environment grounded in mentorship, teamwork, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
COPEweb is a free, fully web-based learning course in COPE for behavioral health providers. The Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) program is an evidence-based, first-line treatment for co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders.

The Drug Abuse Research Training (DART) Program, co-directed by Dr. Sudie Back, Dr. Sarah Book, Dr. Kelly Barth, Dr. Colleen Halliday, and Dr. Kathleen Brady, offers three research training opportunities in addiction science and related fields.

The PTSD & Alcohol Use Treatment & Healing (PATH) Program is a collaborative randomized clinical trial between MUSC and Texas A&M University. It focuses on evaluating the integration of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Relapse Prevention (RP) to treat individuals who concurrently suffer from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).
