Division of Sleep, Mood, Anxiety Research & Treatment

The Sleep, Mood, and Anxiety Research and Treatment (SMART) Division is a research intensive and clinical services program that conducts basic and clinical research and offers state-of-the-art, evidence-informed treatments for adults suffering from various sleep, mood, and anxiety disorders as well as sensory processing disorders such as empty nose syndrome, tinnitus, and environmental sensitivity conditions.

The SMART clinic provides behavioral and pharmacological interventions for of mood and/or anxiety diagnoses, such as social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The clinic also serves individuals with sleep disorders, including insomnia, hypersomnia, narcolepsy, REM behavior disorder, periodic leg movement, and restless leg syndrome.

A 4-bed Sleep Research Physiology and Sleep Research Laboratory is operated within the SMART Division. This space is used to conduct IRB-approved research, which often includes polysomnography (PSG), multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT), and other physiological assessments.

Additionally, through collaborating with other specialty programs, including Burn Behavioral Health (BBH), Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT), Sleep Medicine, and the Bipolar Research Treatment Center, the SMART division ensures exceptional patient care while leading advancements in research.
