Breast Imaging Fellowship

book_2 Learning Mode: Residential

The Medical University of South Carolina is pleased to offer four one-year fellowship positions in Breast Imaging. The MUSC Breast Imaging Division is a comprehensive program with state-of-the-art digital breast tomosynthesis screening, diagnostic mammography with contrast-enhanced mammography, breast ultrasound, and 1.5 and 3T clinical breast MR imaging. All interventional breast imaging procedures including ultrasound-guided, stereotactic-guided, tomosynthesis-guided and MR-guided breast biopsies are performed. Both wire and non-wire localizations are also offered. The MUSC breast imaging faculty are all fellowship trained in breast imaging. The faculty are actively involved in national meetings (ARRS, AIUM, ABR, ACR AAR and RSNA), and are active members in ABR, ACR, and AIUM in addition to the Society of Breast Imaging. The breast imaging division is part of a large multidisciplinary breast program where radiologists work closely with breast surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists and pathologists to optimize patient care.

Thhere is ample clinical work to expose the fellow to the entire gamut of breast imaging. The main campus of breast imaging is at the NCI-Designated cancer center, Hollings Cancer Center, in downtown Charleston. Additional breast imaging facilities are located in the Charleston area and include MUSC Health East Mount Pleasant, MUSC Health West in West Ashley, and MUSC Health North in North Charleston. The fellow will be exposed to high volume numbers in all breast imaging modalities and procedures. We have expanded growth in all breast imaging areas. The department is a site for a tomosynthesis multi-institutional ACR trial.

The fellows participate in all aspects of the division and is expected to help teach medical students and residents. There also is a weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor board in which all the newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are reviewed. The Breast Imaging Division plays an important and integral role in this conference. It is the fellow's responsibility to prepare and present at these meetings and doing so serves as a great learning experience for the fellows.

MUSC is part of the Breast Imaging Fellowship Consortium via the Society of Breast Imaging and the fellows have weekly didactic protected time. Willingness of the fellow to be involved in research projects of the division and to complete / publish / present is encouraged but not required. The research endeavors are closely monitored by the attending staff who serve as mentors for these responsibilities. The fellow will meet with the fellowship director several times a year for mentorship, self-assessment/learning plan, and career development.
