Benefits
The Department of Radiology & Radiological Science at MUSC supports the institution’s educational mission by providing comprehensive training for medical students, residents, and fellows through a robust curriculum, expert faculty mentorship, and access to state of the art imaging technology. The department maintains a strong commitment to educating the next generation of radiologists, offering diverse clinical experiences, structured didactics, and multidisciplinary learning opportunities across its accredited residency and fellowship programs.
Educational Fund
- $875 allotted per year ($3500 for 4-year residency/$4375 for 5-year residency) which may be used for books, ABR fees, and non-presenting conference travel expenses.
- An additional $1500 per year is provided for presenters at conferences to help with travel and hotel expenses.
- ACR-AIRP attendance funds. During the R3 year the department registers and pays for each resident to attend the 4-week AIRP radiology/pathology correlation course, currently $2275. This course provides an opportunity for each resident to dedicate their workday to curriculum and lectures developed specifically for radiology residents in training.

Annual compensation for residents is in accordance with the compensation schedule that is in effect on July 1 of each year. Paychecks are received on the last working day of the month.
Annual Leave: Full-time residents receive three weeks of compensated annual leave per year.
Sick Leave: Full-time residents receive three weeks of sick leave per year. Sick leave can be used for personal illness, disability or injury, and for medical, dental or optical appointments.
Parental/Caregiver/Medical (PCM) Leave
Parental Leave:
Grants up to six weeks of paid time off to bond with a newborn, newly adopted, or newly fostered child, or a minor for whom legal guardianship has been newly appointed. Residents must submit the request /notification form as early as possible to the program director and GME.

Health Insurance: Residents and their dependents are eligible for State insurance benefits administered by PEBA insurance, which include MUSC Health, Dental, Vision, Optional Life, Dependent Life Spouse, Dependent Life Child Coverage and Supplemental Long-Term Disability. Premiums are deducted on a pre-tax basis via payroll deduction.
Life Insurance: Residents are eligible to elect optional life, dependent life spouse and coverage for children.
Flexible Spending Accounts: Residents are eligible to elect Medical and Dependent Care Spending Accounts. Deductions are taken on a pretax basis.
Disability Insurance: Residents will receive basic long term disability insurance if health insurance is elected. If approved, the benefit is 62.5%, not to exceed $800, and begins after a 90-day waiting period. Supplemental long-term disability insurance is available at a competitive rate. If participating in the PEBA traditional pension plan, after eight (8) years of earned service (vesting period) in the event of a disability, Residents are eligible to apply for disability retirement if they are also approved for Social Security Disability.
Professional Liability Coverage: The resident will be covered for malpractice liability while performing duties and responsibilities in the program. The policy provides $1,200,000 per medical occurrence.
Retirement: Residents have an opportunity to participate in one of the two State Retirement plans offered by SC PEBA Retirement. Participation is optional. Residents have 30 days to choose a plan or to opt out of State Retirement. Contributions are deducted on a pre-taxed basis and represent a flat percent of participant’s salary. This deduction is set & determined by SC PEBA Retirement. Election of membership is permanent until separation of employment.

After 1 year of State Retirement participation, there is an ‘Active Incidental Death Benefit’ equal to 1x’s annual salary, payable in a lump sum to participant’s beneficiary, upon employee’s death.
Meals: MUSC provides money for meals from the MUSC cafeteria, Subway, Chick-Fil-A, Pandini’s, Starbucks, the Ashley River Tower Cafeteria, hospital gift shops, and all other MUSC Sodexo cafes. All residents will receive $100 per month for a meal allowance. Residents in departments with inpatient services scheduled for home-call shifts receive an additional $5 per scheduled shift.
