Second Year Fellowship

Program Basics

  • Established 2024 (non-ACGME program)
  • Number of fellows per year: 1-2
    • 1 position available as TACS (Trauma/Acute Care Surgery) fellow
    • Separate position available as Burn fellow
  • Length: One year
  • Requirements: Completion of an ACGME-approved general surgery residency with board certification/eligibility and successful completion of an SCC fellowship
    • SCC fellowship can be completed at MUSC or a different institution

TACS Fellowship year:

  • Employed as a Clinical Instructor
  • Opportunity to function at the Attending level while structuring the year as desired to expand EGS, Trauma, Elective Surgery, and Critical Care Attending experience (with appropriate clinical oversight by program faculty)
  • Opportunity to expand experience in chest wall reconstruction and complex abdominal wall reconstruction
  • Availability of robot for both elective and EGS cases to provide additional experience
  • Opportunities for participation in ongoing clinical and quality improvement research projects
  • Opportunity to observe and participate in a highly successful violence intervention program

Burn Fellowship Year:

  • Employed as a Clinical Instructor
  • Location:  MUSC / South Carolina Burn Center
  • Goal:  To train surgeons that are interested in performing patient centered, high-quality burn care which can be incorporated into a critical care and/or Trauma and Acute Care Surgery practice.
  • At least 6-9 months primary experience on the burn service which, if successfully completed, will result in an institutional burn certification
  • Exposure to Attending level trauma/ACS/critical care coverage can be incorporated throughout the year or during the remaining months
  • Burn education includes both adult and pediatric patients
  • Opportunities for participation in ongoing clinical research projects and present at national meetings
  • Well respected faculty with leadership positions within the national burn surgery community
