Procedural Experience & Volume

Procedural Experience

Fellows receive extensive hands-on training performing a wide range of regional anesthetic procedures using ultrasound guidance, nerve stimulation, and landmark-based techniques when appropriate.

Training includes:

Upper Extremity Blocks

  • Interscalene
  • Supraclavicular
  • Infraclavicular
  • Axillary
  • Distal peripheral nerve blocks

Lower Extremity Blocks

  • Lumbar plexus
  • Femoral nerve
  • Adductor canal / saphenous
  • Sciatic (proximal and distal approaches)
  • Ankle blocks

Truncal Blocks

  • Paravertebral
  • Transversus abdominis plane (TAP)
  • Quadratus lumborum
  • PECS I and II
  • Serratus plane blocks

Neuraxial Techniques

  • Spinal anesthesia
  • Lumbar epidural anesthesia
  • Thoracic epidural anesthesia
  • Caudal anesthesia

Fellows also gain experience managing continuous peripheral nerve catheters and postoperative pain regimens.

Acute Pain Medicine Training

Fellows actively participate in the Acute Pain Service, developing expertise in perioperative pain management and multimodal analgesia.

Key areas of training include:

  • Local anesthetic pharmacology and toxicity management
  • Multimodal analgesia strategies
  • Systemic and neuraxial opioid therapy
  • Non-opioid analgesics and adjunct medications
  • Pain management in opioid-tolerant and chronic pain patients
  • Recognition and management of complications related to regional anesthesia

Graduates are prepared to lead acute pain services and serve as consultants for perioperative pain management.

Procedural Volume and Case Experience

One of the major strengths of the MUSC fellowship is the high procedural volume and diverse surgical case mix.

Annual Department Volume
  • 10,000+ regional blocks performed annually
  • 35,000+ anesthetics supervised by the department
  • Level I trauma center exposure
  • High-volume ambulatory surgery center experience
Fellow Procedural Experience

During the fellowship year, fellows gain extensive experience performing and supervising regional anesthesia procedures, including:

  • Upper extremity blocks
  • Lower extremity blocks
  • Truncal blocks
  • Thoracic and lumbar epidurals
  • Spinal anesthesia
  • Continuous peripheral nerve catheter placement

Fellows also participate in postoperative management of regional catheters and multimodal pain regimens, gaining comprehensive experience in acute pain medicine.
