Athletic Training Residency

Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) Seal

The Medical University Athletic Training Residency Program is a 12-month program beginning in July of each year in which the AT residents rotate between multiple subspecialties under the supervision of clinical preceptors within the Orthopedic practice.

The resident will have the opportunity to grow their knowledge and professional skills through didactic training, participation in grand rounds and weekly conferences, collaborative clinical research, clinic-based evaluation and treatment, and participation in the surgical setting. Under the guidance of both operative and non-operative physicians, the resident will learn how to collect, understand, and present outcomes-based clinical research, interpret imaging studies, and use ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance for the placement of diagnostic/therapeutic injections. They will become proficient at aseptic technique, patient positioning, suturing, graft harvesting and arthroscopic camera placement in the operating room.

The athletic training resident will be subject to evaluation by their supervising physician and preceptor at the end of each rotation, and will be required to pass a written examination, as well as a practical skills test. The AT resident will also provide a written evaluation outlining their experience and rating their clinical preceptor/attending physician(s) within each subspecialty, as well as processes that can be improved for optimal resident education.
