Pediatrics Health Engagement Committee Goals & Initiatives

  • Establish population health and community engagement initiatives to improve health outcomes.
  • Ensure a respectful and supportive clinical environment for patients and families.
  • Increase sense of belonging for everyone in the pediatrics workforce.
  • Expand recruitment initiatives to ensure opportunity for all.
  • Implement a formal health outcomes and cultural awareness curriculum.

Workforce & Community Engagement Opportunities

  • MUSC CARES Clinic is a student-run free clinic that provides services for un/underinsured members of the Lowcountry community. CARES offers monthly specialty nights including Spanish-primary language night and a pediatrics night.
  • Pediatrics Health Engagement Committee serves to support a workforce that can care for and improve health outcomes for all children. We are very proud that this committee has representation that provides a broad range of ideas and backgrounds, including residents, fellows, departmental staff, junior faculty, senior faculty, and faculty in leadership positions.
  • Aequitas Health – MUSC is a founding chapter of the Health Equity Medical Honors Society.
    McClennan-Banks Residents & Fellows Networking Group provides educational, service, networking, and mentorship opportunities for groups of different backgrounds and cultures.
  • Project IMPACT is a MUSC Charleston Division initiative to improve social impact, equity, workforce development & well-being for everyone.

  • Our University Pediatrics-Northwoods Clinic boasts a bilingual staff and provides primary pediatric care for many of our families for whom Spanish is their primary language. This clinic is an elective option for residents.
  • The Pediatric Primary Care Resident Clinic serves patients and families from all cultural, socioeconomic, and insurance backgrounds and has several initiatives to improve quality of care and health outcomes for all children in the community.
  • The MUSC School-based Health Program provides access to high-quality healthcare in the school setting at Burke High School and through telehealth.
  • MUSC Health has several primary care and subspecialty care satellite clinics across the region.
  • iSpeak Spanish certification is available for all providers.

  • The MUSC Health Center for Telehealth is one of the few National Telehealth Centers of Excellence in the country. Our telehealth services connect hospitals in low-access, rural and underserved areas in South Carolina with MUSC specialty services. The Center is also the headquarters of the South Carolina Telehealth Alliance (SCTA).

  • The MUSC Center for Health Disparities, established in 2005, focuses on the key areas of health disparities, rural health and disease prevention with specific focus on chronic diseases.

  • Virtual Happy Hours faculty and resident applicants
  • Dedicated residency program interview days to learn more about engagement of the pediatrics workforce and building community
  • Formal recruitment strategies to improve opportunity for all in the pediatrics workforce.
  • Opportunity to mentor students in Pathway Programs through the College of Medicine Dean’s Office and represent Pediatrics.
  • Recruitment at SNMA and LMSA conferences

  • The MUSC Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness supports schools in the adoption of proven strategies that promote optimal health and well-being for all.
  • Dinner & Conversation events for pediatric faculty, residents & fellows to build a network of peers, mentors, and friends.
  • Formal mentoring programs for faculty and residents.
  • Participation in McClennan-Banks Residents & Fellows Networking Group.
