Pediatric Cardiology

The division of pediatric cardiology has a tripartite mission:

  • Provide outstanding clinical care for children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease throughout the state of South Carolina and beyond;·
  • Educate the next generation of pediatric cardiologists and other clinicians who provide care for our patient population;·
  • Generate new knowledge through research and quality improvement initiatives that will improve outcomes both locally and around the world.

A sustained track record of excellence in each of these areas is facilitated by a nationally recognized culture of collegiality, respect and shared decision-making.

About the Division

The Children’s Heart Center of South Carolina is the only tertiary care pediatric cardiology referral center for the Children’s Heart Program of South Carolina; a consortium of all the pediatric cardiology practitioners in the state. The clinical excellence of the heart Center/recognized nationally; the program has been ranked 4th in the country by US News & World Report since 2022. Our risk adjusted surgical outcomes are among the best in the country as reported on the Society of Thoracic Surgeons website.

Our team of pediatric cardiologists provides diagnostic and treatment services for children with heart disease in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. These physicians and other care providers work together with other pediatric specialists to coordinate care and provide the best possible outcomes to our patients.

The pediatric cardiology fellowship program at MUSC has been in existence for more than five decades. In addition to categorical pediatric cardiology fellows, the division trains a number of subspecialty fellows. We also provide clinical training for MUSC’s medical students, residents and trainees from many other clinical disciplines.

In collaboration with colleagues across MUSC's campus and around the country, faculty within the Division of Pediatric Cardiology conduct cutting-edge research and participate in quality improvement initiatives that are impactful both locally and nationally. This work includes local investigator-initiated studies, multicenter randomized trials and cohort studies supported with federal, industry, and foundations. Our pediatric cardiologists have a strong track record of providing meaningful research experiences for trainees which have led to countless national presentations and publications, multiple extramural funding awards and several national awards.
