Overview

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology maintains an active consultation service for children with gastrointestinal, nutritional and liver problems. The Pediatric Gastroenterology Division performs over 8,000 outpatient visits and 1,500 inpatient consultations annually.

The goal of the Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition fellowship is to train academic pediatric gastroenterologists with an emphasis on excellence in clinical care. The first year of the program is devoted to clinical training, emphasizing both our inpatient consultation service as well as outpatient clinic. The focus of the second and third years of fellowship is clinical and laboratory research.

MUSC’s Pediatric GI fellowship was started in 2018 and currently accepts one fellow per year. We participate in the NRMP Match.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is to train highly qualified pediatricians to deliver exceptional, compassionate clinical care to children with a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders. The Program is committed to developing skilled clinician educators and research investigators who advance the field of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition through the creation, application, and dissemination of innovative research, education, and evidence-based practice.

  • In 2026, MUSC launched their Advanced Pediatric Endoscopy Program and Pancreas Center. The program is led by Dr. Sherif Ibrahim, MD.
  • Our Division Chief, Ben Kuhn, DO, is a nationally recognized specialist in Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE).
  • Our Program Director, Jordan Whatley, MD, is a Co-Host of Bowel Sounds - the official podcast of NASPGHAN.
  • In 2024, Candi Jump, DO was awarded the NASPGHAN Teri Li Young Educator Award. She created the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program and served as PD until 2025. She leads the Intestinal Rehabilitation Program and Nutrition Support Service.
  • Dr. Nagraj Kasi, MD is the Medical Director of MUSC Pediatric Transplant Hepatology.
  • Dr. Nancy Swiader, DO leads the Pediatric Neurogastroenterology and Motility Program
