Didactics
Conferences and Lectures
- Every other week there is an afternoon devoted to fellowship educational conferences. This includes: pathology conference, didactic presentations from faculty within the department, journal club, and board review. Fellows take an active role in Fellows Conference with presentations on relevant topics. During fellowship continuity clinic there is a physiology review.
- There are multiple other educational opportunities related to Pediatric Gastroenterology including an online nutrition curriculum and video capsule endoscopy training.
Teaching Experience
- Fellows present lectures to Medical Students, Residents, Nurses, and other medical professionals on topics related to Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Fellows participate in the creation of the Fellow's Didactic curriculum throughout the year
- The MUSC Graduate Medical Education office offers a Clinician as Educator certificate program, which focuses on improving teaching, feedback, and mentorship skills
- Fellows also have the opportunity to serve as Clinical Coaches for the Pediatric Residency Program

Emerging Leaders Program
The Emerging Leaders Program is designed for trainees and faculty interested in gaining crucial leadership experience. Whether managing teams, projects, or initiatives, or preparing to take on new responsibilities, participants of the program develop the critical skills needed to lead effectively from wherever they are.
Leadership Resource Library powered by MUSC Libraries
Curated collection of books and online resources designed to support growth in leadership. Many of the titles featured here have been recommended by senior leaders across MUSC and by facilitators of our leadership development programs. This collection aims to strengthen communication skills, deepen emotional intelligence, and refine the approach to leadership.
MUSC Excellence Program
The MUSC Excellence Program provides leaders at MUSC with Excellence Essentials (tools, tactics, and information) to help leaders achieve successful performance, service, and quality outcomes.
Administrative Experience
- Fellows have the opportunity to participate in committees and meetings within and outside of the Division and Department (quality and safety meetings, advocacy, medical education, etc.)
- We encourage Fellows to get involved in local, regional, national, and international multidisciplinary committees that support their interest within the field of Pediatric GI (e.g. NASPGHAN Committees and Special Interest Groups)
Research Experience
- Fellows participate in regular journal clubs with critical review of the Pediatric Gastroenterology literature
- Fellows design and implement a primary research project to meet American Board of Pediatrics Scholarly Activity requirements for Pediatric Gastroenterology Board Certification
- During the first year Research Development block, Fellows identify research mentors and their primary project
- Each Fellow is supported by a Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) to ensure scholarly progress
- The Fellowship Program provides excellent opportunities for clinical, translational, and basic science research through the Darby Children’s Research Institute (DCRI) and the Digestive Disease Research Center Core (DDRCC)
- Fellows submit their research (posters and oral presentations) to national meetings (e.g. NAPSGHAN, DDW, etc.) as well as the Darby's Children's Research Institute (DCRI) Annual Symposium at MUSC (held yearly)
- Fellows complete research training during their Fellowship including the MUSC Core Clinical Research Training program and QI training (via the Trainee Performance Incentive program, which offers an additional yearly salary bonus for completing the program)
