Meds-Peds Residency Curriculum

Education Overview

About the Clinic

Our MUSC Pediatrics and Internal Medicine Clinic opened in January 2020 and now serves as the Med-Peds continuity clinic for all incoming classes, starting with the 2020 PGY-1 class. It is the first clinic of its kind within the MUSC community and is already a huge success! We attract a wide-ranging patient population that offers outstanding opportunities for primary care teaching across the entire lifespan.

The clinic is located about 20 minutes from our downtown campus at 2750 Dantzler Avenue in North Charleston. Several MUSC laboratory and imaging facilities are located nearby for easy patient access.

Training & Supervision

Starting intern year, residents in the program participate in our combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics clinic experience. Clinic occurs approximately one full day per week on your outpatient and elective months, with some half day sessions on inpatient months. Over your four years of residency, you will gain a deeper mastery of knowledge and skills in primary care while forming memorable relationships with your panel of patients as well as clinic faculty and staff. Patient visits range from well child/ adolescent care and adult health maintenance to a vast array of acute and chronic medical issues. You will be supervised and mentored by a core group of MUSC Med-Peds faculty: Dr. Nathalie Malcolm, Dr. Ellen Maher, Dr. Jacob Vaught, and Dr. KC Head.

Primary Care Curriculum

Prior to each clinic half day session, residents participate in a 30-minute, interactive didactic session. Our clinic curriculum focuses on understanding guidelines of care and uses both case-based and board preparatory learning, as well as online modules. Residents also participate in quality improvement/patient safety initiatives.

Med-Peds Clinical Opportunities:

  • Med-Peds Clinic Elective – Provides additional primary care time in the Med-Peds Clinic in North Charleston, typically done in PGY3/PGY4 years, residents also will participate/assist in the clinic curriculum
  • Med-Peds Transitions Rotation – Rotating elective through specialty clinics providing transitional care (done in 3rd or 4th year) Ex: sickle cell disease, adult CHD, SLE clinic, renal transplant, HIV
