Favorite things about Charleston: The weather, the beaches, the rich history and architecture, the food scene... the list goes on and on but most importantly my co-residents and the family they've become over the past three years, cliché but so true!
Career/Research Interests: I am applying to Pediatric Critical Care fellowship this summer!
Why MUSC Med-Peds: I was immediately interested in MUSC Med-Peds after watching the NMPRA spotlight session and getting to see Dr. Mennito's enthusiasm both for Med-Peds as a specialty and our program at MUSC. I knew I was looking for a program with two robust categorical programs at a well-established academic center, but I also wanted to find a program with a strong sense of community that promoted getting to know each and every resident. Many of the residents at the social hour the night before the interview were hanging out (outdoors in the middle of December) and during the happy hour they really demonstrated how well they knew each other and how much they enjoyed each other's company. I was also drawn to the (then new) Med-Peds continuity clinic in North Charleston fully staffed with Med-Peds faculty (this is just another example of the strong Med-Peds presence at MUSC) and the brand-new pediatric hospital. Lastly, I was blown away by the residents' passion for serving underserved patient populations and knew the program's values and interests closely aligned with mine.

Favorite things about Charleston: Best of all worlds! A city feel when you want it with great shopping, restaurants, breweries, and tourists/tourism with deep history. Or also a quaint beach town with great creek taverns, barrier island beaches, and outdoor adventures. Truly love this city and low country atmosphere, and the hospitality of the local community exceeds all expectations of what you read in travel magazines.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: Short answer: Dr. Mennito. Longer answer: Just like my thoughts on Charleston, MUSC MedPeds has it all going on. MUSC is an incredible academic institution with a large catchment area that does practically everything/has every specialty in house and has endless research opportunities for residents. The medical school is thriving and has great opportunities to get involved with as a resident. Finally, the reason MUSC was top choice, the MedPeds program and everyone who makes that up are so welcoming, supportive, and incredibly successful on their own paths. They were a people that I wanted to be mentored by, learn from, and hopefully be like in future practice!

Favorite things about Charleston: I had never been to Charleston prior to interview season but surprisingly it’s one of my mother’s favorite cities. With proximity to my family who is scattered throughout the Southeastern US it couldn’t be a better location for me. I have since visited and I would say the food, the culture/history and the people make Charleston great!
Career/Research Interests: Health Disparities, Global Health, and serving underserved communities
Why MUSC Med-Peds: The level of support provided to the residents, the leadership that is fostered, and the wide variety of the patient population and pathologies were a few of my top reasons for choosing MUSC. Ultimately, it was the residents and faculty that I met throughout the interview process that made me feel like MUSC was the perfect place for me.

Favorite things about Charleston: I had never been to Charleston prior to moving for residency, but I am in awe with this city. From incredibly delicious and creative restaurants, beautiful beaches, and the sunny weather, it has everything I like. Also, the people have to be one of the friendliest that I have ever interacted with!
Career/Research Interests: I am thinking GI, interested in continuity of care for those with IBD
Why MUSC Med-Peds: Seriously, when I finished my interview at MUSC, I remember thinking that this was it. From the faculty sharing all the amazing aspects of the program, the Med-Peds Clinic, the residents having a blast showing us the beautiful ocean views from their workstation; it all felt right for me. MUSC checked off all of the important aspects I was looking for in a residency program. From great fellowship matches, to working with a varied population, I was immediately excited at the prospect of working here.

Favorite things about Charleston: You can't beat having a beach 15 minutes away after a day at the hospital. Even as someone who's been coming to Charleston his whole life, the city is constantly changing with amazing new restaurants, endless outdoor activities, and people always wanting to come visit you. It's grown so much over the last 6 years but still retains a lot of its small-town charm.
Career/Research Interests: Pediatric Critical Care, Acute Resuscitation, Quality Improvement, and Pulmonary Hypertension
Why MUSC Med-Peds: No matter the service, categorical faculty really appreciate the input and perspective we bring from other areas of the hospital. We're valued and respected members of the team and have a great clinical reputation amongst our colleagues. There are tons of Med-Peds faculty available for guidance to help navigate future career paths. Most importantly though, we love hanging out together and socializing any chance we get!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: As a medical student here, I learned that both the MUSC Internal Medicine and Pediatrics departments were outstanding. I was seeking a program that provided a wide-ranging patient population, emphasized medical education, and mentoring. MUSC fit that description and more!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: On my interview day, both the residents and program leadership were so warm and friendly which made me feel truly welcomed. Additionally, as a large academic health center with strong Internal Medicine and Pediatric programs, I knew I would receive a very well-rounded education that would prepare me for any and all of my career aspirations. I was also really impressed with the new Med-Peds clinic and opportunities for community outreach.

Favorite things about Charleston: People love to come and visit! I am a bit of a homebody, so I love living in a destination where friends and family will come see me. It is so much fun to show off Charleston and also very convenient when your schedule is so busy!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: I know it is cliché, but truly the people! MUSC as an institution is such a special place filled with some of the kindest, most compassionate people. I realized early on in medical school that I really looked up to the Med-Peds residents and wanted to be a part of their family. Dr. Mennito and the program as a whole has a great reputation on campus. They were always so welcoming to me, offering advice and mentorship at every step. I tried not to be biased during the interview season, but nothing compared to the opportunities here. I could not be prouder to be a part of MUSC Med-Peds!

Favorite things about Charleston: Being able to take days off on the beach, the incredible seafood, the gorgeous architecture, beautiful running routes... And never having to dig my car out of the snow again!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: It truly checked all of my boxes. Med-Peds colleagues who were clearly passionate about their program, supportive program leadership, two strong categorical programs with great facilities, people who prioritized life both in and out of the hospital, and the patient population. Residents and faculty were warm and welcoming on my interview day, and clearly showed how happy they were at MUSC. I knew no doors would be closed by training at MUSC, and also knew the wide scope of patients and pathologies would push me out of my comfort zone to become the best possible physician, no matter what I choose to pursue!

Favorite things about Charleston: The weather! Coming from Chicago, I'm so excited to be done with all the icy winds and snowstorms. I also love the people here. Everyone is so friendly and will always say hi to you as you're walking down the street! People don't hesitate to offer their help and lend a hand when you need!
Career/Research Interests: Undecided! I have an interest in adult cardiology, but I also love the idea of primary care. We'll see what happens!
Why MUSC Med-Peds: In addition to MUSC hitting all my personal requirements for a residency program (having a Med-Peds clinic, a wide-ranging patient population, etc.), I chose MUSC Med-Peds because of how friendly and welcoming everyone was. On interview day, I enjoyed talking to both faculty and current residents. I had never been to Charleston before, but I felt so welcomed by everyone I talked to! I knew I wanted to train at a place where learning was not only encouraged but also supported, and MUSC fit that perfectly. I was able to visit before making my rank list and had such a great time touring the hospital and getting to meet a few residents - the rest is history!

Why MUSC Med-Peds: During the resident social, everyone expressed how supported they felt by each other and their leadership. On interview day, Dr. Mennito's kindness and warmth confirmed to me that I would indeed feel supported during these years. I also love the quick switch in the first 2 months of residency, the established connection with global health in Haiti, and its status as the major referral center in the state!

Favorite things about Charleston: I had never been to Charleston before matching at MUSC, but so far, I have encountered the most friendly people that have made the move across the country a little easier. I definitely underestimated the concept of Southern Hospitality. I am excited to continue to explore the various restaurants, beaches, and historical sites around the area. I am a huge animal fan, so I am also looking forward to kayaking on Shem Creek with the dolphins.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: I never imagined that I would move across the country from my family and friends for residency; however, after my interview day with the Med-Peds team at MUSC, I felt an incomparable sense of excitement. It was actually my last interview of the season, and I had unknowingly saved the best for last. It felt like it could be my new home away from home. I truly had no doubt in my mind that the fantastic leaders and my co-residents would care about me, support me, and encourage me to be the best physician and person I could be. That was really all I could ask for in a residency program, and it was a huge bonus that this new adventure would be in one of the most beautiful places in the United States. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to continue to learn and serve here.

Favorite Things About Charleston: coastal lifestyle, proximity to family, food scene
Career Interests: I am currently undecided between pursuing a fellowship or a career as a Med-Peds hospitalist. My clinical interests include hematology/oncology, pediatric critical care, and transitional care for adolescents and young adults with chronic conditions.
Why MUSC Med-Peds: MUSC stood out as the ideal place to train, offering the perfect blend of educational rigor, a supportive community, and a location that feels like home. As a major referral center with high patient volume and acuity, MUSC provides exposure to a broad range of complex cases, preparing residents well for whatever their future holds. Beyond the clinical opportunities, the program’s culture truly sets it apart. From interview day, I felt an immediate connection with the faculty and residents, making it easy to see how I would fit in both professionally and socially. Charleston was another major draw as it is close to home and offers a lifestyle that’s a great fit for my wife and me as beach lovers. MUSC checked every box, and we’re thrilled to be joining the Med-Peds family.

Favorite things about Charleston: I love that Charleston is a beach city. I've always wanted to live near a beach, so that appealed to me. I also like that many people said that it was a great city to live in and that it has a great food scene. Even though I haven't spent much time in Charleston, it felt like an inviting place that can quickly become home.
Career Interests: As of now I'm thinking of becoming a Cardiologist, unsure if adult or pediatric, but that's my current interest. I hope to also continue to reach the community through my non-profit and other efforts to serve the underserved.
Why MUSC Med-Peds: I chose MUSC Med-Peds because I felt a warm welcome from everyone who I came in contact with whether it was the residents or the program director. I felt that I would be able to develop myself as a person and resident throughout this program while still holding true to my values in the medical field. After interview day, MUSC's impression stayed with me, and I often found myself referring back to that moment. I felt that MUSC would support me regardless of what may be going on and that strengthened my decision. I believe my time at MUSC will create unique and memorable experiences that I will be able to use throughout my time in the future.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: From the very beginning, every interaction I had with MUSC felt warm and personal. The pre-interview social was a great experience. The residents were welcoming, asked thoughtful questions that reflected our individual interests, and clearly enjoyed spending time together. Interview day just built on that feeling. My interviewers were kind and curious, and they truly took an interest in my journey and passions, not just in what I had done but in who I was and what I cared about. That energy made me feel seen in a way I did not expect, leaving me feeling more confident about the kind of physician I am working to become. Beyond that, I was drawn to the strong Med-Peds identity at MUSC, the integration with both categorical programs, the continuity clinic, and the program's clear commitment to serving the community. I was also really excited about the community outreach work the program is involved in. It shows that care does not stop at the hospital and that the program is actively connected to the people it serves. It was clear that this program blended everything I was looking for: excellent training, a close-knit community, and the space to grow into the kind of physician I hoped to become.

Favorite Things About Charleston: I might be biased, but it’s the best city! I love going out on the boat, trying new restaurants (always looking to swap recs), listening to live music at local bars and venues, and exploring Charleston’s beautiful landscapes. While there’s always an event to attend, you can’t beat walking the historic streets or relaxing on the beach.

Why MUSC Med-Peds: I was drawn to a program that values its learners and provides robust clinical experiences in both adult and pediatric medicine. As a medical student at MUSC, I witnessed the dedication of the Med-Peds faculty and residents to clinical excellence, teaching, and mentorship. Their support during my clinical rotations, the application process, and now during the transition to residency has been invaluable. I’m excited to continue learning and caring for patients alongside the passionate and accomplished Med-Peds faculty and residents!
