Why MUSC: Throughout the application process, I searched for a program that supplemented outstanding clinical education with substantial child advocacy at the individual, community and state levels. MUSC checked those boxes, and after visiting Charleston, I became increasingly drawn to the region and brand new facilities at the Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. A fantastic interview day experience with Dr. Mills and some current residents helped solidify the decision, and it certainly didn't hurt to be trading in Philadelphia's weather for South Carolina sunshine!

Medical School: East Carolina University

Why MUSC: There are so many reasons why MUSC was top of my list. The first is a bit of a cliché, but the people are AMAZING. From pre-interview communications to resident socials to my interview day interactions, I truly felt like this was a warm, welcoming family. I was looking for a medium-sized program where I could get to know my attendings closely, but have flexibility in scheduling and opportunities to work with fellows. I also wanted a center where it was rare to have to refer out patients (e.g. congenital heart disease, heme/onc), making sure I would have good subspecialty exposure and experience. Additionally, I was also looking for a program where I could not only get a great foundation in pediatrics, but also gain skills in advocacy, medical education, and possibly global health. I loved the flexibility of the track experiences here and was impressed with the community involvement, advocacy opportunities, and teaching experiences that residents had access to while in training. Finally, I loved Charleston when I visited – I wanted a place where I could enjoy life outside of work, and this warm, coastal, beautiful city was absolutely what I was looking for. The brand new children’s hospital with outdoor areas for staff to get sunlight and fresh air was just icing on the cake.

Why MUSC: Being a medical student at MUSC, I was lucky to be able to work with so many of the residents and faculty in person before residency. From the first day meeting everyone, you can tell how happy everyone is to be able to work together, and how much they enjoy spending time together outside of the hospital too. Even on difficult or really busy days, it was so apparent that everyone really cared about each other and wanted to help one another. I also loved that MUSC is a mid-sized program with faculty that enjoy teaching and that we get to work in a beautiful stand-alone children's hospital right on the water. Charleston is such an amazing place to live, with great beaches and restaurants and so many places to explore, which makes it all even better!

Why MUSC: There is so much to love about this program and it always felt right from day one! On my interview day, everyone was so kind and truly excited about getting to know all the applicants. There was a huge focus on how this program could help each individual thrive in their interests and future career which was refreshing. Dr. Mill’s love for the program and the residents is contagious and I just knew this was a program where I would not only have a great education, but also be surrounded by awesome humans. The fact that this program was mid-sized, had a stand-alone children’s hospital with STUNNING views, and was in a great location was a major plus for me, too!

Why MUSC: I was drawn to MUSC initially due to the Pediatric Primary Care program because that’s what I want to do. I was looking for a medium-sized program that would prepare me well as a general pediatrician, as well as ideally had opportunities to work with Spanish-speaking populations. MUSC seemed to be the right fit for me, and I immediately fell in love on interview day! Everyone is so kind and supportive, and it truly feels like your family. Plus, I couldn’t pass up being able to work and train in a beautiful city close to the beach!

Why MUSC: I chose MUSC because of the sense of community I felt throughout the program. When I was a medical student, the residents, faculty, and interdisciplinary staff here were always supportive and invested in my learning. I knew I would continue to receive quality training if I was lucky enough to match here. I am beyond excited to stay in Charleston, train with an incredible team, and continue to care for my local community!

Why MUSC: I will never forget the feeling of being cared for during my interview day with MUSC. The program leadership at MUSC is like no other. Many people describe a "gut" feeling and I definitely had that! This feeling has been reassured day in and day out at MUSC. MUSC checked all the boxes and more for me including a free-standing children's hospital, a Global health track, commitment to health advocacy, a balanced schedule and a superb residency culture. Not to mention that Charleston is a GREAT place to live. I can't get over the fact that the ocean is a 15-minute drive away!

Why MUSC: MUSC first caught my eye when I heard about its unique primary care curriculum combining the exposure of a stand-alone children’s hospital with a focused outpatient experience. However, it was on interview day when I knew this was my place and my people. I was taken back by everyone’s excitement for their program and city as well as the genuine interest of the faculty in us not just as applicants but as people. I knew that this close-knit, easy-going, and supportive community would prepare me to be the best pediatrician possible. And hey, being close to the beach is a sweet bonus!

Why MUSC: As a Charleston native, I had a lot of personal reasons for being interested in staying here for residency, and my desire to stay was reinforced by every interaction I had with the pediatric residency program. The program is small enough that I got a feel for its strong sense of community and emphasis on education even while I was still in medical school. At the same time, the children's hospital is large enough that there was a wide variety of clinical encounters, patient population and acuity of condition, which provided invaluable learning opportunities not only in clinical medicine but also in areas like community health and advocacy. That combination provided me with a fantastic pediatric education during medical school, and I felt confident that the training I would get from the residency program here would help me provide the best care possible to the children and families in my community.

Why MUSC: The single most significant factor in choosing MUSC was the people. Before starting residency, I knew it would be challenging, but I wanted to be surrounded by people who could support me and be there during the difficult moments. During my interview, everyone seemed welcoming, happy to work together, kind, and friendly. Even though the interview was virtual, I just knew I wanted to be part of this family. I was also looking for a program that allowed residents to work closely with the local community. Being here, I can tell you that MUSC goes above and beyond to care for the children in South Carolina and is always looking for ways to serve them better. Last but not least, the location. Being in such a beautiful city where I could access beautiful warm beaches and amazing food was the cherry on top.

Why MUSC: I had an incredible experience during the interview day, so much so that I texted all my closest friends immediately after about how I knew MUSC was the program for me. Even virtually, I got the sense that the residents and faculty were tight-knit and supportive of one another. This belief has only been strengthened since my time here. Aside from the strong sense of community, I was also drawn to MUSC for its amazing leadership and hospital. Not to mention, Charleston is such a fun and vibrant city to live in!

Why MUSC: I chose MUSC because I couldn't stop thinking about my amazing interview day, the people I met, and the possibility of living in Charleston! The program itself checked a lot of my boxes being a medium-sized program, with numerous fellowship opportunities, and a leadership team that truly wishes to support their residents. But I was also impressed with the feeling of the program as well, it seemed like everyone I met was happy to be where they were at and around the people they were with. Plus, I had never lived near an ocean so MUSC was too good to be true. It still seems surreal that I am here, but I am so incredibly thankful!

Why MUSC: I initially chose MUSC for school based on institutional reputation, access to a wide variety of top-ranked specialties, and opportunities in the Charleston area in which my family can get involved. As a student, I was impressed with the pediatrics program’s leadership team, facilities, and overall program, and I knew that I wanted to stay here for residency, and this decision has only been confirmed the longer I am here. Not having to move my family again was a nice bonus.

Why MUSC: During the interview process, I was looking for a medium sized program that saw patients with a wide range of pathologies, and where I felt like I would be able to have a good relationship with my co-residents and attendings. From the beginning MUSC just felt right, and everyone I talked to on interview day was amazing. The views from the hospital and being close to the beach are also definitely a plus.

Why MUSC: I ranked MUSC number 1 for many reasons. First of all, I really liked the size of the program. I wanted the opportunity to get to know my co-residents and faculty and have a close-knit, family-feel but also have adequate coverage. I also loved the Charleston area, even though I had never visited in person! I heard nothing but wonderful things and I loved the thought of being so close to the beach! My husband and I have already been 5 times and it has only been a month since we moved here! Additionally, I felt like the residents did a lot of fun activities together and were creating true friendships. I think what sealed the deal for me though was Dr. Dave Mills, the Program Director. On my interview day, he made introductions fun and interactive and not awkward at all! He was extremely enthusiastic and energetic, but also genuine. He memorized several interesting facts from our application and basically introduced each applicant on interview day. I was very impressed by this unique quality; it showed how much he cared about each of us as individuals and that he actually read our applications! The entire interview day was very engaging and kept my focus, despite being on Zoom. It was one of the few programs that provided pretty much everything I needed to know during the presentations. I am only 1 block into residency, but I can already tell I made an excellent choice, and I am looking forward to working with this amazing group of people and living in this super fun city for the next 3 years!

I was looking for a program where I would get a firm foundation as a general pediatrician while feeling 100% supported and I am SO excited to have found that at MUSC and within the primary care tract. Having attended medical school here, I was already impressed by the program's positive atmosphere and commitment to medical education. I've lived in Charleston for nearly a decade now and I still haven't run out of new places to explore. I couldn't imagine a better place to do my residency.

Why MUSC: Why you chose MUSC for your residency program: After completing a sub-internship rotation at one of MUSC's pediatric clinics, I knew this was the program that would provide the most varied and stimulating experience for me. Not only is Shawn Jenkin's Children's the only stand-alone children's hospital in the state but it is also a nationally ranked hospital for multiple pediatric subspecialties, something that was important to me when choosing where I wanted to train. On match day I was ecstatic to find out that I couples-matched with my boyfriend and we would be continuing our training in Charleston. Everyone has been so supportive, and it is clear the faculty is invested in their residents. Aside from being at my top program, the charm of Charleston is unmatched, and we already feel as though it is our home.

Why MUSC: Interview day! I'm undecided for life post-residency, so I was looking for an academic center with a standalone children's hospital and mid-size program where I would see the breadth of pediatrics. Most importantly, I was looking for a supportive program with close-knit residents and faculty invested in mentoring residents. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, and it was easy to see the strong bond between residents even through the screen. Being here now, my gut feeling was confirmed and I'm definitely in the right place for me. Aside from the awesome program, Charleston is a great city if you love the beach, sun, and good food!

Why MUSC: MUSC has been such a great fit for me and I'm so glad I came here. I was initially drawn to the primary care track and the focus on advocacy, and being here for just a few months, I have already received so much education around topics I am passionate about. I was also drawn to the resident continuity clinic, serving a wide-ranging patient population while allowing us to have our own patient panel. Even on my interview day, I felt like everyone loved MUSC and that the residents enjoyed working here and had created a great community within the program. Also, MUSC was incredibly supportive during the couple's match, and my husband and I are so grateful to have matched here together!

Why MUSC: To be completely honest, I actually did not know MUSC existed when I first started to think about residency and looking at programs. It actually wasn't until a brief academic setback that actually led me to think about applying more broadly that I then found MUSC. I now tell people that what I thought was the worst day of my life with the setback actually ended up being the single best thing to happen to me in med school because it led me to my dream residency program that I didn't realize was a dream residency program! (And don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't match into your number one program because you had a setback! Believe in yourself!) On interview day, even through a virtual Zoom screen, I had a gut feeling that told me there was something special about this program, and finding out about the unique primary care residency track and getting to serve the underserved and being the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and Level 4 NICU in South Carolina all aligned with my current career and educational goals, and then as cheesy as it sounds, truly getting to meet the people that made this program so special was ultimately what helped sealed the deal. Since being here, it has only confirmed that I definitely made the right decision. I had a fear of not fitting in and not finding a place to belong, but that was quickly proven to be wrong as the people in my class were definitely "my people" from day 1 and I could not be more grateful to have gained 23 new best friends in a literal heartbeat. And it speaks volumes to have upper levels who not just care about you academically but also make it a priority to check in on your wellness. And don't even get me started on having the best program director and program coordinator around, people who truly care for you for who you are!!! I think I could go on and on about all the good things and perhaps write an entire novel haha, but I truly think this special Disney-esque like magic of MUSC is something that you just have to experience for yourself! It is an absolute joy to get to be here! I dreamt a fantastical dream and I ended up at a hospital that has unbeatable views with some of the most extraordinary people! Finally, trading the Central and West Texas deserts for Charleston beaches was just the cherry on top! Tweaking the words of the iconic Taylor Swift... "Welcome to MUSC, it's been waiting for you!"

Why MUSC: There were so many reasons I loved MUSC and many more that I’ve discovered since being here! While saying the people is cliché it truly was a large factor in the process and something that I’ve found to be so true. From the attendings and program staff to the other residents, everyone truly has your back and wants to see you grow and get to know you as a person. I have also loved the small feel of the program while being an independent children’s hospital drawing from the entire state of South Carolina. They truly have it all here which allows you to pursue whatever career path you choose without being lost in the crowd. Also Charleston is a wonderful city and the hospital views don’t hurt… 10/10 would make the choice again!

Why MUSC: MUSC had everything I was hoping for in a program: a prestigious education, fellowship and advocacy opportunities, a stand-alone children’s hospital, and an awesome location. Yet, it was the people who made this decision such an easy one for me. I knew that I wanted to come to MUSC as soon as I had my interview day. From start to finish, everyone was so welcoming and immediately made me feel right at home. It was obvious that Dr. Mills and our wonderful program coordinator Becky care so much about the program and the residents. It just truly felt like the right choice for me. Since moving to Charleston, I have fallen in love with the city, this program, and serving the children of South Carolina. I am so thankful that I ended up at MUSC.

Why MUSC: As a medical student, I loved being part of the MUSC community. During my pediatric rotations, I saw how the residents genuinely cared for each other and their patients... from the little notes of appreciation to the home baked treats. In addition, residents and faculty always went above and beyond so that each member of the team felt supported. This continues to be the case now that I have started residency training. Not only are the people so special, but the program also offers an abundance of opportunity for career exploration and fellowship options post-residency. I have already learned a tremendous amount from the fellows I've worked with, and I’ve had opportunities to perform procedures such as intubation and lumbar punctures. It's also a huge bonus to live in a place so beautiful! Working in the stand-alone children's hospital (built in 2020), we get to enjoy some of the best views in Charleston. On the seventh and eight floors, there are outdoor spaces perfect for a break and some fresh air. The local wildlife is a marvel, and I consider myself lucky every day!!

Why MUSC: Moving down South was not something I originally had on my 2024 Bingo card but that quickly changed. Throughout the interview trail, I searched for a program full of caring residents and faculty who would make wherever I moved to feel like home and I found it here at MUSC. I could tell Dr. Mills truly cared for each resident in the program as well as each applicant on the call. Not only was my interview day fun, but it was full of support and genuine excitement for what was to come. I did not doubt that my future co-residents and faculty would push me to be a well-rounded physician. The MUSC Peds family is nothing short of excellent!

When I returned for medical school in 2021, I was thrilled about the option to stay for residency here in pediatrics. Charleston has so much to offer in terms of activities and opportunities for my family and me. The program is just right size with multiple subspecialties offering ample clinical encounters for learning. The support from the program directors, mentors, and coaches has been outstanding.

Why MUSC: The virtual interview process for residency was challenging! It was especially difficult to get an accurate “feel” for the program and its values online. That said, I found myself smiling and laughing throughout the entirety of my MUSC interview day. The genuine excitement and supportive nature of the team members, faculty, and residents I interacted with was contagious. As someone who had never stepped foot on the MUSC campus prior to residency, I can honestly say that all these feelings have only continued during my time here! The program itself also checked off all my boxes, with a medium-sized class and many avenues to explore my interests in advocacy, community outreach, and subspecialty training. Beyond that, Charleston is an amazing place to live and work. I have been so happy spending my free time outdoors – swimming, looking for shark teeth, and taking walks in the many county parks. MUSC is the right fit for me, and I am so excited to spend the next 3 years here!

Why MUSC: There were a lot of things that factored into my decision to choose MUSC, but the most important one to me was that I knew MUSC would feel like my home away from home. I've met amazing friends and mentors since starting residency! From the start of my interview day, I could feel what a supportive environment MUSC was. I also loved hearing about how individualized the curriculum can be to fit career goals and interests! MUSC is a unique blend of a strong academic program with faculty that prioritize your personal growth and wellness, and co-residents that feel like family. Of course I can't leave out what a beautiful city Charleston is, and the fact that the beach is a short drive away!

Why MUSC: Following my interview day, I was drawn to the outstanding opportunities for medical education, commitment to clinical coaching, and culture of community and collegiality, which became apparent during my interactions with faculty, staff, and current residents. I loved that MUSC participated in initiatives prioritizing patients' holistic well-being, including food distribution in clinic and different areas of the hospital. Every interaction with the people here solidified that I would be surrounded by an encouraging learning environment that would shape me into a great pediatrician!

Why MUSC: I started following the MUSC residency pages on social media during my first year of medical school. It always seemed like the residents were having a great time together, even when they were working long hours or sleeping over in the hospital during a hurricane! When I had my interview I got the same feeling from the residents and faculty that I met. It was obvious that everyone has a lot of fun together and really cared about each other. It seemed like a place where everyone would do what they could to help you reach your goals. I also appreciated that they didn't try to downplay or minimize how hard residency would be, they were honest about the work but didn't seem burnt out by it. The location and the views from the hospital don't hurt either!

Why MUSC: MUSC was at the top of my list during interview season for so many reasons! I was initially drawn to the location as I wanted to stay close to family in the southeast, and Charleston is a gorgeous city with endless things to do outside of work. On my interview day, I was absolutely sold! The program’s commitment to providing a strong general pediatrics foundation, emphasis on advocacy and medical education in the curriculum, and camaraderie between residents and faculty aligned perfectly with what I was looking for in residency. Dr. Mills' enthusiasm was contagious and was it was clear that every individual resident was valued. There is a huge emphasis on mentorship, and I have felt very well supported during my first month. The new stand-alone children's hospital with a 7th floor view overlooking the water isn’t too bad either!

Why MUSC: I was definitely overwhelmed with choosing the ""right"" residency program before interviews started, but I knew I wanted a medium-sized program that shared my values: a strong, supportive community among residents and faculty, a genuine passion for community outreach and advocacy, and a commitment to providing outstanding resident education and patient care in both general pediatrics and any subspecialty I might want to pursue - all without compromising resident wellness. MUSC checked every one of those boxes, and I could tell they truly lived those values from the moment I logged on to my interview! Everyone I talked to expressed genuine enthusiasm for the program and showed a true interest in my passions, as well as how MUSC could help me develop them. Even though we had just met, they cared about who I wanted to be as both a physician and a person. With only one visit to MUSC before moving, I still felt that same warm welcome on my first day of residency and was confident I had made the right choice! Plus, living near the beach and enjoying all Charleston has to offer has been an amazing bonus!"

Why MUSC: When trying to decide where I wanted to be for residency, two qualities were very important to me. I wanted to be a part of a program that is always willing to have the self-reflection to adapt and one that offered a multitude of opportunities that would help me become the best pediatrician that I could be. Very quickly MUSC stood apart from other programs because of the level of communication during the interview process and the overall enthusiasm from all those I was able to meet about pediatrics and beyond. And of course, Charleston is such a beautiful town that is always ready to offer a new adventure!

Why MUSC: By the time I got to application season for pediatrics residency, I had gotten to know MUSC really well. First as a child life volunteer throughout my high school years, later as a clinical research coordinator when I finished undergrad, and finally as a medical student! Based on my experiences with the MUSC pediatrics program, the decision to stay at MUSC for residency was a no brainer. I was looking for a mid-sized program with broad access to sub-specialty care that would prepare me to provide evidence-based care for patients along the full spectrum of acuity. I also wanted a residency with strong, structured programming relating to advocacy and medical education. In addition to checking each of those boxes, MUSC provided a tight-knit community of people that I just loved. I knew I would leave this residency with lifelong friends and too many mentors to count! Charleston's fabulous food scene and immediate access to the ocean are just icing on the cake, and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this program

Why MUSC: Choosing MUSC was the obvious choice for me. As a medical student at MUSC, I had a taste of the wonderful culture of the pediatric residency program. Now as a resident, I get to experience the family-feel of the program every day! Being a medium-sized program, my intern class is already close and the attendings get to know you very well. Starting intern year in July, I felt very supported by the program leadership, my attendings, and my upper-level residents. I feel confident that I will be supported and prepared for whatever career path I choose after residency. Having lived in Charleston for over 4 years now, I can say that the location doesn't get better than this! I love walking around downtown, going to the beach, and trying new restaurants and coffee shops. I am thrilled that I get to stay here for the next 3 years!

Why MUSC: MUSC offered everything I was looking for in a residency program! The size of the program means you can truly get to know everyone, while the setting in a standalone children’s hospital provides all the benefits and resources of a major pediatric center. As someone who came into residency open to many career paths, I valued a program that provided diverse experiences in both outpatient and inpatient pediatrics—and MUSC does exactly that. During my interview day, every conversation with faculty, leadership, and residents reinforced the culture here: supportive, collaborative, and deeply committed to helping children and their families live healthier lives. And, as everyone will tell you, the proximity to the beach and the stunning views are a huge plus! My wife and I have loved our time in Charleston so far, and we’re excited to keep exploring this beautiful city.

Why MUSC: From the moment I started on my sub-I on inpatient wards, I knew this was a special place and an incredible group of people here at MUSC! I felt like both faculty and residents alike were truly invested in getting to know me and to see me grow during my month here. The camaraderie among the residents was undeniable, and I immediately knew this was the kind of environment I wanted to be part of! I was overjoyed to have the opportunity to match at MUSC and call Charleston my new home! Outside of work, Charleston has been such a fun place to live. I've loved exploring the beaches and trails with my husband and golden retriever, soaking in the stunning water views, and discovering that it’s nearly impossible to have a bad meal here. But at the end of the day, it’s the people who brought me to MUSC—and I’m so thankful they did! I cannot imagine a better fit for me in a program and a better place to train. I am so excited I get to call this residency, and Charleston, home for the next 3 years!

Why MUSC: MUSC was my top choice for residency, and I’m so happy to be here! There’s so much to consider during the interview process, and MUSC truly checked all of my boxes. From the start, I was impressed by our program director, Dr. Mills. He made everyone feel welcome, even giving us a virtual fist bump. I’m especially passionate about advocacy, and MUSC’s dedicated advocacy track offers incredible opportunities to engage with the community. I also wanted a medium-sized program where I could feel seen and build close relationships—and I’ve found exactly that. Location mattered to me as well, and Charleston is absolutely beautiful. Plus, the hospital’s outdoor patios with their amazing views make the experience even better!

Why MUSC: WOW, I could list so many reasons why everyone should consider MUSC as their next residency home. As I went through the interview process, I was looking for a medium sized program, a collaborative and supportive education centered curriculum, and a fun place to live this next journey of life. My time so far at MUSC has surpassed anything I could have ever expected. I spend my days at the hospital laughing with co-residents, caring for a special patient population, and observing the marina from the 7th floor. I spend Fridays hitting up our weekly happy hours and days off at the beach. I have felt supported by not only my amazing co-interns, but the upper levels and attendings. And I have been in awe of the amazing faculty and peers I get to learn from on a daily basis. I am so lucky to feel so supported during such a stressful and busy part of our training! I am forever thankful to have ended up here and am excited for the rest of this journey!

Why MUSC: MUSC Primary Care Pediatrics is everything I had hoped it would be! I wanted a program that offered high acuity alongside tailored primary care training, and I found it in this program. During the residency interview season I wondered if my affinity for this program was due to my familiarity with the faculty through medically school, but I realized that no other program offered what I was seeking as well as MUSC primary care pediatrics. These first few months of residency have confirmed that decision and I couldn't be happier to be here. The culture is energetic and inclusive, which makes me excited every morning when I walk into work.

Why MUSC: When I did my audition here, everyone was so welcoming and excited to teach me so I know I would get great training here. Also, SJCH is such an inclusive environment for patients and their families, the entire place is kid friendly. I also love Charleston and never want to leave!

Why MUSC: After attending MUSC for medical school, I knew this would be an amazing place to do residency. The faculty have a passion for education and were such great teachers during my clinical rotations, and they were willing to be mentors and help support residents every step of the way to reach their career goals. The residency program has a warm, family feel that was evident even during my time as a student, and the residents enjoy spending time together outside of work. Everyone is always so supportive of one another and truly cares for each other. I knew I wanted to go to a program that offered broad exposure to many pathologies, opportunities to explore different subspecialties, and had a stand-alone children’s hospital, and MUSC checked all of those boxes and more! I am so thankful to be doing residency here!

Why MUSC: I chose MUSC because during my interview, it genuinely felt like they already knew who I was. Even over a virtual call, everyone’s energy and excitement came through. I left that day knowing this was a place where I’d be supported and feel at home, and it has been everything I hoped it would be.

Why MUSC: Having graduated from MUSC and completed my clinical years here at Shawn Jenkins, wanting to stay was a no-brainer! Everyone I interacted with was kind, willing to teach, and created an incredibly supportive environment for learning. Developing mentors here is so easy because there are so many staff members to look up to! No matter who- attendings, residents, pharmacists, nurses, registered dietitians, or other ancillary staff, everyone prioritized working together to create the perfect environment for healing, and I am so grateful to now be a part of that team! It also does not hurt that Charleston is the most beautiful city to live in, the 7th floor balcony is the best place to unwind after a long day, and the snack cart is a 10/10 pick me up after a long day.

Why MUSC: Right off the bat, I was blown away by how much time Dr. Mills spent getting to know all the applicants that interviewed. He would memorize each applicants' hobbies down to the smallest of details! I thought that if MUSC had a program director that was willing to put that much extra effort into getting to know us, even before we were residents, then MUSC had to have a positive and supportive learning environment. I can now confirm that this is the case! There are so many mentors and support systems in place that sometimes I forget who they all are! We also get assigned to different houses (named after Charleston's beaches) where we engage in different competitions, but I thought that was a cute way to promote camaraderie between residents and faculty.

Why MUSC: Choosing MUSC for my pediatric residency was a natural choice after completing medical school here. I’ve been continually inspired by the supportive faculty and their dedication to resident growth and well-being. Beyond the hospital, Charleston has been a wonderful place to call home. With its welcoming community and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, it has been the perfect place for my wife and I to raise our kids. I feel grateful to continue my training in a program and city that nurtures both my professional and personal life.

Why MUSC: When I was choosing where to apply for residency, I loved MUSC for so many reasons. I loved the fact that there were so many subspecialists to learn from and rotate with, that the hospital was 20 minutes from the beach, and that each residency class was large enough to allow easier coverage but small enough to feel close knit. After interview day, I loved MUSC even more because the people were so amazing. Dr. Mills cares so much about us succeeding in and out of work, and everyone seemed to like each other. Being here is even more amazing than I could have hoped!

Why MUSC: I chose MUSC for residency for many reasons! I had lived in Virginia my whole life and was ready to make a big change but also wanted to be at a place where I knew I would be comfortable. I am fortunate to have many long-term friends that have moved to Charleston, so this made starting over in a new state less scary. On top of that, the people that I met throughout virtual interviews, my in-person tour, and through MUSC socials really sold me on the program. Everyone was incredibly friendly and warm and so I was confident that in coming to this program I would find my people and would be supported in various ways over the course of the three years. Additionally, I have a passion for advocacy and loved hearing and seeing all the ways that the MUSC peds program gets involved with the community and couldn’t wait to get involved!
